Not strange.
New players that ask about which title to get are directed to EO3, and veterans either are replaying all the way from EO1 and haven't got around to this yet or skipped directly to EO3 since it is the only one without a 3DS remake, so EO2 ends up being a niche inside a niche.
Directing them to E03 is a terrible thing to do. How is anyone supposed to play the other two Titles after that?
It is kind of a catch-22 situation, EO1 can be very unpalatable nowadays so you can get more player retention out of EO3, but at the same time can make EO1/EO2 hard to enjoy for people that started with EO3.

x)
Then I'm one of the very few currently playing it lol. Just started 1 now to fix remaining achievements though.
It's a rather long crawler due to slow animations even on fastest settings. And even longer for completionists, at least for EO1 due to the horrible drop rates.
6 dragon fights in the game can easily take up to ~50-75% of your total playtime if you are unlucky and are going for the item drops.
Besides that - most people normally start from 1st part... And even without the issues above it will still take ~30-40 hours to rush through for most people.
The minority who can read will probably read the advice to skip the first 2 parts and go straight for 3rd one to get a somewhat solid crawler. Add a few people who also would rather play newer releases first in general.
And to top it off the most dedicated fanbase is likely too lazy to launch more than 1 game and leave a comment so they mostly launch a game on either first or third for a few minutes.
There's also the fact that 2 has a save file import feature, which is also an active disincentive to start with it first for players who're playing more than 1 game or just making their way through the trilogy.
The remasters thankfully backported the super fast speeds in the later games, so battles actually go by MUCH FASTER than in the DS versions of 1 and 2 where there were constant pauses after every animation, and animations themselves couldn't be sped up. Auto dashing was also backported, so 1 and 2 are overall much faster games to go through.
Also yeah the drop rates in 1 are horribad. The Dragonbane (Shinryu Sword in the original) is such an awful grind to go through. You can RNG manip it more easily now but god. At least in 2 Scavenge is overpowered. Instead they just have you grind up 30 of a drop for some unfathomable reason!
Maybe kill all FOEs when you first encounter them ^^ Hexer's Poison and DH's Climax is really good to level at once. I noticed that they are more deadly than in the first game so fleeing from them is the usual recommendation. I still went out and killed Stalker with level 10 team and used few few Nectars as well.
To me the game doesn't have that many jobs/classes(it's the first game after all) and the encounter rate reminds me of older shin megami tensei titles. Two steps, random encounter.
Many times I thought about getting the stalker skill to lv10 until I finally unlocked the gold chimes...
Also, you unlock the hexer and samurai a little too late, the game doens't really encorage you to swap characters since the grind is really tedious and why is the level cap 70? xD
I wish there was a way to take a 2nd party with you and get passive exp, I think you could do something like that in Class of Hereoes...
Combat/strategy wise, felt ok to me, played on expert and I've never hit a wall or anything like that but then again I think I used the safest party available.
Protector and sword guy front row, dancer, mage and medic back row :p
All in all, I still had fun with the game and I want to play the 2nd and 3rd one.
This time I think I'll try the hexer class and change things a little bit so it's not the exact party from the first game.
The 2nd and 3rd game look a lot more versatile jobs/class wise giving you more freedom to use different options to tackle the dungeons.
Be aware that a lot of the classes between 1 and 2 got nerfed hard. Survivalist basically took his class name to literally and has now a lot of trouble with well surviving(his damage in e2 is simply non existent ).
Hexer are S Tier if not broken in E2. A Hexer Status Ailments will trivialize any random battle or he can embrace the rng god and team up with a dark hunter for some ecstasy fun. and more.
However you need his Curses at Max Level.
Basically :
Lv 1 : Works once if you try 1000 Times
max : Misses once if you try 1000 Times. (normal enemies only, bosses and foe are more resistant )
Boost got turned from : Boring but useful to : broken like a hexer (depending on classes )
I considered some of them so broken, i in fact banned them for myself.
The experienced a lot in 2 and i feel like the just skipped the testing phase.
prolly like this
Step 1 : Change everything
Step 2 : ???
Step 3 : Profit
One thing I noticed is that they also removed the "defender" skill from the Protector and "Immunize" from medic. I guess those were really powerfull in the first game.
I was thinking to take Landsknecht or Protector, Ronin, war Magus (looks cool, can fight and heal), Gunner (a mage with guns that can also remove debuffs from party), hexer or survivalist but I guess I'll avoid the survivalist then, and now I'm not so sure about the hexer either haha xD
Thanks for the heads up!
That's a fine Party altough Gunner never managed to impress me when i played the Game back then. I had a weird 2 Ronins, 1 War Magus, 1 Medic and a Gunner Party. Worked out quite well.
