Point is, it was a conscious decision to port over the DS versions over the 3DS versions, because at this point those are the oldest games that weren't easily accessible (the others could all be downloaded from the E-Shop on the 3DS). I would have prefered the Untold versions too. And yes, the price is absolute highway robbery. Doesn't matter which version - 40 bucks is too high for the originals, it's too high for the Untold games too. But don't act like there's no point in bringing the originals over the Untold games.
Yes.
I have already purchased.
One of the original Etrian Odyssey promo comics had something to say about this...[etrian.fandom.com]
Bosses weren't that bad. I am sure with a proper team, you can deal with the bosses just fine. Fafnir is strong and easy to use, but other classes can also deal a lot of damage at a steadier pace without relying on Force Boost. I managed to clear the game with a team 5 Hexers on Normal (yes, Normal not hard. The 3rd Stratum Mid-Boss was near-impossible even on Normal. I also skip the 6th Stratum. Fun challenge run though).
Story mode is a choice. You don't have to play it if you don't like it (you are only missing 1 dungeon in EO1U, and in EO2U they've learned their lesson and the story dungeon is an optional one in Classic mode).
Story Mode is a great way to introduce new fans from other RPG franchises, since the game gives you a party that's easy to use and can have good synergy (in both Untolds, party have a Medic, a Protector, a class with status effect and classes that synergies using elemental attacks). I think of it as a tutorial for new fans, while Classic Mode is harder since you are free to choose any party you want, so you can mess up if you don't know what a party needs (in most RPG, status effects are pretty bad and unnecessary, while in EO you need them to hinder hard-hitting enemies). Also, having named character with defined personality is easier to sell to new fans rather than just showing quick portraits of mute characters in a trailer and expecting people to try it.
I will say though I didn't like the story from EO2U (and EOU1 ruins some revelation way too early compare to the original. I do like the additional of Gungnir), but it doesn't mean the mode shouldn't exists at all.
If they started at , say 19.99, you would think that is a good price right? Then discounts would only be from 19.99.
Instead, start at 39.99, for example. Die hard people, which for the most part the people who are going to buy this game anyway, purchase it.
with out going on and on, basically its all business, Square, Atlus, whatever, they are all giant businesses that care about profit above all else, they know they will make more at this price point than a lower one. Thats it.
And if for some reason it doesnt sell at this price, then SURE ENOUGH, you will pick it up at 50% off at 19.99, wouldnt you?
I admit I've only played small amounts of all the games except for EO4, but from everything I've gathered the Untold games are different enough it wouldn't even be double dipping. Different dungeon layouts, story mode, and 2D vs 3D. I consider for instance Final Fantasy III and IV different enough in their 2D vs 3D versions to be parallel releases, not one replacing the other.
Outside that the rest was a mix of good and bad, I felt the story wasn't needed and detracted from letting your imagination take over.
