How do I get an Xbox controller to work?

Sure this is a waste of time, as I see many people have had issues with this for years. Is there a way to get an Xbox controller to work with this bastard game? I have tried all the enable/disable nonsense, running in big picture etc. I am on Mac, so not sure I can download the xbox accessories app, or whatever it's called.

Any other hints?

Hm. On Windows I just plug in my Xbox controller and it works, nothing else needed. There's a way to have Steam take over the controller inputs entirely so you aren't using native Xbox or Playstation controller inputs - you've tried that?

Sorry, mine worked out of the box on Windows. Is yours wired or wireless?
