How does fish roe work?

I'm new to this game and I just unlocked the fish farm, I swear I remember hearing during the tutorial that you can only gather roe from live fish, and so I assumed you had to tranquilize them to get their eggs, and I've been doing that whenever I want to get fish for the farm, but then I came up from one of my last dives and I just had an entire grocery list of miscellaneous eggs from random catches. The specific one that caught me off guard was a megamouth shark egg, the megamouth shark obviously being a shark, a type of fish that you not only have to kill and then harvest to get its meat, but one that I haven't been able to successfully knock out yet, so now I'm confused, is it just a random chance to get roe whenever you catch a fish?

Pretty much, though I believe that live catches give a higher chance of finding roe.

Yep, it's just a random chance. I have not seen anyone do enough statistical analysis to conclusively say that live catches have a higher percentage of roe.

there are definitely more chances to get roe from live fish. And I tested a lot because I was trying to have every fish in the aquarium.
