That means if you set out 5 servings of, say, Atlantic mackerel sushi, another 5 servings will be brought out when you run out. If your night ends and you just served your last serving, auto supply will replenish and waste 5 servings.
On the other hand, if you set out 1 serving of the same, another 1 serving will be replenished when you run out. When the same scenario happens as above, you'll only waste 1 serving.
Later in the game, when you switch to more complex recipes that have multiple servings per set of ingredients, auto supply's value becomes significantly less because you're at risk of wasting more. Early on when you're still serving simple single ingredient sushi, however, it's a boon because wasting 1 piece of fish meat isn't that bad compared to the benefits of the automation.
