There is an Info app in your smartphone that explains how the Sea People's mirror works. Everything in the game that pops up with an explainer box is accessible there. The explanation is pretty simple: while the sun is up, you can use the mirror to skip directly to the village and start your dive there. Your current objectives are also always available in your To-Do app.
Based on how the game's save structure works and just how the basic gameplay loop behaves, I think saving during a dive is unlikely to ever happen.
If you need to be somewhere *immediately*, just leave the game running and plan better next time. Dialogue won't advance without your input, simulating consoles' suspend and resume functionality.
I agree there should probably be a warning or some kind of prompt about it being an extended thing. It doesn't match with the rest of the gameplay, which is all brief, very cut-short-able events if needed, so it was really unexpected.
That said, I LOVE this game and have played it through, and look forward to any new content in updates. I just agree that the extended cut scene situation is kind of annoying since it always surprises me at the most inopportune times.
If you don't have a clue what you're supposed to be doing, look in your phone. It's all there.
