Excessively long cut scenes.
This looked like a game that i could just pick up and play for a few minutes at a time. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The basic game loop is fine but the random out of nowhere interminable cut scenes that you cant skip, abort, or repeat.

I stopped playing the game after the cut scene that occurs after you find that place that gives you a mirror. There was a 1000 word explanation on how it works , then people talking about stuff. then more stuff. different guy shows up in a boat and talks incessantly .. i ended up skipping 99% of this cut scene because i had to be somewhere and wanted to save and get credit for the massive pile of loot that i also got when i got railroaded into that plot. Now i don't have a clue with what I'm supposed to be doing since that cut scene dropped a ton of extra mechanics as well.

I don't suppose there is a mod or something that lets you rewatch cut scenes, or give you some hint that "if you do this, you will be stuck here for 15 minutes talking". Or i guess at the very least perform the save before the long lectures and allow quitting the game mid cutscene. I'm not sure what would make this better.

It... sounds like a lot of your issues are self-inflicted, if we're being honest. The game has a story, which means cutscenes, and I don't know of many non-open world games that behave like you want. (I recommend you never play a Metal Gear Solid game.) The game could be more transparent about when cutscenes or boss events end your dive forcibly (or just not do that, which would be my preference) but aside from that...

There is an Info app in your smartphone that explains how the Sea People's mirror works. Everything in the game that pops up with an explainer box is accessible there. The explanation is pretty simple: while the sun is up, you can use the mirror to skip directly to the village and start your dive there. Your current objectives are also always available in your To-Do app.

Based on how the game's save structure works and just how the basic gameplay loop behaves, I think saving during a dive is unlikely to ever happen.

If you need to be somewhere *immediately*, just leave the game running and plan better next time. Dialogue won't advance without your input, simulating consoles' suspend and resume functionality.

Nah, I'm on your side. The cutscene with Bancho's backstory was the one that got me. It took SO long, and it was interesting, but I didn't expect to get involved in this plot element that would take so much time before I had to get off.
I agree there should probably be a warning or some kind of prompt about it being an extended thing. It doesn't match with the rest of the gameplay, which is all brief, very cut-short-able events if needed, so it was really unexpected.
That said, I LOVE this game and have played it through, and look forward to any new content in updates. I just agree that the extended cut scene situation is kind of annoying since it always surprises me at the most inopportune times.

You're finishing main story missions and getting annoyed that there's more story at the end? This game may not be for you.

If you don't have a clue what you're supposed to be doing, look in your phone. It's all there.
