Threshers are ridiculous
I can't Be the only one who thinks Threshers need to be taken off the crack, I understand that they are meant to be dangerous like all the other sharks but THEY all have openings to exploit while the Threshers are just on your ass at all times.

All the sharks that have a lunge or dash attack (along with the Marlin and Sailfish too) you can dodge and shoot them in the side or back and the Hammerheads "headbutts" i guess you could say, same thing: move to side, shoot it in the side.
However the Threshers have no such openings as their recovery from attacks is like 0.2 seconds, there lunges are quick giving you no time to move and ever if you do their tail swing will negate your successful dodge. Add in their hearty health pool and their ability to devastate yours, they are my least favourite marine animal to encounter.

A simple buffer between their attack and resumed pursuit along with a bit more of "tell" before they attack I believe would be an impactful and healthy change to their design.

Yeah there are a lot of similar post on the forum

They are the sole reason I switch to sniper rifle as main weapon
Can’t dodge? Just kill it with firepower from afar

Especially when you reach death sniper rifle, you can kill everything with ease, thought i cant tell whether it is a good game design or not
True, many players find threshers extremely hard and displeasing. Fighting this guy with a harpoon is an absolute no-go.

In my case, 2 modified darts and ship it up the drone.
Yeah after I caught several with the knockout then net trick I decided: "Yeah I'm just never going left again."

I agree that Threshers are OP, but they have manageable openings. They charge in a long straight line and that attack is easily avoided. You can land a hit with your harpoon as it charges, and then hit it another 2 more times as it turns around to face you. The other attack is their tail swipe, and you just swim away and wait it out until it alternates to its charge attack.

If you struggle with a harpoon, then use a rifle. Tranq rifle beats everything early on until you get the modified hush dart.

But if you encounter a thresher next to a shoal of striped catfish, then you’re left with a no-win scenario and you gotta bail quick

oh im not even maxed out and i can harpoon it to death
just dodge towards and to the side of it when charging and only engage when above 200 oxygen so you dont instantly die

I often have a hard time dodging the fast tail attack so I normally abuse the invincibility frame and put 2 darts on him. May be I'll try practice harpooning him later. :)

I have no problem dodging threshers, but that might also be because I use the Dolphin Necklace, which increases my dash speed by 30%

they are not even the hardest of the sharks, nor are they particularly difficult. maybe upgrade a wep or your air to help

Alright, let me rephrase a bit. I'm not saying they are impossible to deal with, I have bested them a few times, I'm just saying that out of every marine animal I've encountered so far, Threshers are the only ones I loathe encountering. They do have exploitable openings, yes, but I personally find that their windows of opportunity are smaller/shorter and there for more frustrating.

Also Rhonox, not trying to start anything just asking out of pure curiosity. In your opinion, which shark is harder?
Rhonox Aug 4, 2023 @ 7:18am
the Greenland shark is harder, but not hard per se
the game itself is not a difficult game, its a casual relaxing experience

Definitely this.

I found it a huge uptick in difficulty once this 'phase' started practically right below where Dave lands, what with the tuna, marlin/sailfish, hammerhead and thresher ADDED to the already-there shark/aggressor pool. I'm still not good at this, like at all, after a month. Still not making enough money for proper updates to my gear, and relying on charms/dumplings every dive to compensate for my particular level of suck. The hammerhead has one-shotted me a few times, especially in the boat wrecks' tight quarters, since it's the only source of sailfish.

The thresher, though, is special as is mako, I believe in that they will actively track/follow you for ages in the shallows. If I don't have the dash and boost charms on, I'm effed completely, ha.

that is far from a "no-win" scenario, and im sure im not the only person who has made it through that exact scenario successfully

I do think it's quite funny how the Shallows becomes the most dangerous region in late game even though the rewards aren't commensurate with the danger as Thresher and Mako meat aren't used in any dishes and only make basic sushi.

Right?! I just love it when loot doesn't scale to effort/difficulty. XD

Man; got both the surprise and fright of my life the first time I ran into the thresher...then the hammerhead...mako... I suck at sharks. Oof, and the marlin. And I was most definitely NOT expecting such a huge jump; this game is just full of pleasant surprises. ;-)
I find underwater scooter (the yellow one, not the red/long-distance one) + dolphin necklace (+30% dash speed; i have it perma-equipped) to be immensely helpful when fighting thresher shark. Without them, I find myself too slow to avoid getting hit
