Non-space-bar button mash, what gives?

So started catching fish and would get the space-bar mash sequence sometimes. Incidentally what decides / triggers it?
Anyhoo a few dives later I see letters "A" and "D" and others but its over before I even had time to register what letters they are.
Whats up with that?
Presumably better on a controller but still the only negative in this awesome game.

If your harpoon isn't strong enough to catch a fish with one hit it will trigger a quicktime event aka "space-bar button mash". If you succeed you catch it, if not try again.

And different types of fish have different types of quicktime events.

Actually that's harpoon tips. Each tip comes with it's own mini "mash", like poison you gotta spin the mouse a direction.

There's also a "bug" (doubt it's a true bug honestly) that if you shoot a fish near a wall with the harpoon it'll just bounce off without damage.

And yes. Fish have a HP system, and depending on how much damage you do to the fish depends when you can instantly grab it, activate the "mash", or just damage it. Once it hits a thresh hold for HP you can then get the minigame.

Yeah, what I was thinking as well, why I doubt it is one. But I think not doing damage is a bug though.

The catch sequence starts when a fish is low enough to be caught and the minigame is based on the harpoon tip you have equipped, normal tip is just spam space, A/D is when you have the electric tip, each type of harpoon tip has its own lil type.

For me it does deal damage, just bounces off the wall

However is it me or is the electric QTE broken? like I got not time at all to start mashing. I barely get a chance to make out what buttons it wants me to press!

Is it the one with a dial? You're not supposed to mash that. You time it to green electric meter.

It's not broken, cool your jets.

It's a fast-reaction mini-game; that's just how it is. Your best bet is to memorize -- either through your own explorations, or by googling -- what the button-mashing QTE is for each given harpoon tip. Then, when you come across one, you'll know what to do.

Personally, I cannot stand the button-mashing QTEs, so I only use the standard harpoon tip and its upgrades. You can play the entire game without ever picking up one of the 'fancy' tips.

Some of the reaction buttons are mashing but a sequence. Like say if you harpoon a fish and get a prompt like A W D then you press A W D in that order and you will get the fish.

Some of the reaction buttons are not about mashing but a sequence. Like say if you harpoon a fish and get a prompt like A W D then you press A W D in that order and you will get the fish.
