Does the dart gun just do nothing to sharks?

I've seen people saying the upgraded one can put them to sleep, but I've never been able to get it to work, even after firing an entire ammo pool of the enhanced Mk II gun.

I really want to put these sharks to sleep so I can capture them but it seems the gun dedicated entirely to doing that just can't? Meanwhile the toy hammer can bop them to sleep instantly.

Unless you have it fully upgraded, according to others, then it takes a couple of shots to put them to sleep, otherwise it's useless against large creatures like sharks

i have shot all 6 into a shark and refilled and shot those 6 it didnt work is there a specific way you have to shoot them

1.You must make sure that your sleep dart gun has been upgraded to the highest level. (This requires using materials available from the blacksmith vendor in the Mermaid Village.)

2.After hitting the target with two darts, you must wait for approximately three seconds for the tranquilizer to take effect. Continuously shooting and hitting the target will cause them to wake up.

when do you unlock the blacksmith i just got to where you move the mirror and have done all quest up to that point

You need to upgrade your tranq gun to level 4, which is gated by story progress in chapter 6.
Your best bet in capturing large fish before that is by upgrading your rifle to the tranquilizer tree so you have a 40% chance to tranq even large fish.

your super close to unlocking the blacksmith, i believe its after you get to the glacial zone and cant progress unless you make a warm suit.
Edit: until you an actually upgrade the dart i would focus on the Tranq Rifle, more shots and still a good chance to put things to sleep.
