Dunkleosteus isn't fun
Yeah no the idea is neat but the implementation? Not so much. Unfair to engage since it turns too fast and the window after baiting attacks is too narrow. Sure sleep works but really you shouldn't be forced into one strat to catch certain things just because any other method is way too tedious. Give a slightly longer window to counter or reduce its turn speed while increasing its straight line speed and it would be a lot more fun and engaging.

EDIT: Yeah I am just marking the second guy's response as the "answer" since this has somehow drawn toxicity. You guys stop tearing each other up, or don't, not my problem any more. Take it to DMs if you got problems don't duke it out in discussions. Have a nice day.

It is an ok source of single ingredient dish for the branch, but then so is the Narwhall, and the other two medium aggresive fish in the Vents (Rock type sting ray + Chunky Barricuda).

So otherwise you can just start ignoring it.

When you do fight it, yeah it does turn fast considering its hitbox. There is still some leeway to aim above its head onto its back when its turning at an angle to you. Fire and Poison especially help since you aren't hitting it as frequently. I tried remote bombs once which do damage but not really viable to go out of your way for.

If you are especially annoyed you can cheese it with its leash range so it turns its back on you.

But Steel net and Hush Dart gun are still to valuable to be worth taking other guns for a one off aggressive fish like this.

I'm overall cool with the Dunkle, but I would like it to be made more apparent that its immunity is the result of the area hit rather than a flat immunity to particular weapons. Before Dunkle, when fish or crustaceans were immune to one of my attacks it was because I didn't have the equipment necessary to defeat or capture it. Dunkle kinda throws out the game's reliance on equipment gating that I'd been conditioned to accept prior to this encounter. I think even with bosses, the mantis shrimp is the only other instance of part-based immunity and that's notoriously confusing as well.

I have to disagree. There needs to be difficulty. And there is nothing wrong with having certain strategies work better than others.

I do think *where* he is immune is sort of unclear. You would think shooting the thing in the face or under the tail would be effective, but it's not. The hitbox is weird.

Why? I was just wishing for a non-hostile mode so that I could just chill and fish to relax.

Exactly, the rest of the game is not hard. I am not saying remove the mechanic, I just think the window for counter isn't large enough for anything other than sleep tactics and that is stale. It can be such an engaging fight but due to the fast turn rate and iffy hitbox for the weak zone (on multiple occasions I have hit it in the belly only to bounce) it is more frustrating than fun and runs counter to the rest of the game.

Like I said, make is very fast in lines but slow to turn. Then it is still challenging to dodge but far easier to exploit the windows to hit it.

Far too late for it now but I would have liked to see normal fish with that same mechanic (i.e. non-hostile fish or even a tuna-like variant with it) to introduce the player to the mechanic rather than it mostly just be a one-off.

Another suggestion (again a bit late to actually put in so I doubt it would ever happen) would be like the mechanic already in the game for the other weapon immune creatures: dropping rocks on them. Being able to stun it by dropping a rock on it would also be a great way to fight it as an option.

I just don't like one-off mechanics for non-boss encounters because it ends up feeling like wasted potential and/or out of the blue "surprise, this one enemy has this thing you have to play around."

Farming it isnt fun, i swear the thoratic sheild drop rates are ridiculous, and we need like 3 of them for the explosive gun upgrade

Yeah, as much as I feel like it is cheesing the entire game, sleeping everything and droning big stuff like sharks is just the best way to get rare materials since the drone has increased drop rates on the stuff it picks up. Unfortunately only 2 a day. Maybe in a future update they will let us harvest fish from the fish farm for rare parts when we send them to the bar (or at least give a small chance that fish farmed give their rare drop).

If you lack confidence in your aim, perhaps you can try using the Dave mannequin available at the Cobra store to divert the attacks of theDunkleosteus. I believe this could be an interesting experiment.

eh it isn't actual MY aim that is the problem, it is the hit-detection. Clean shot? Nope somehow got immune effect on the underside while it is mostly still. It needs some work, it isn't the first instance of some fish not behaving as intended.

It has a weak spot, I thought it was just immune. I had to bait over the other nearby aggressive fish and hit the other fish with the gas grenade tranq whilst the Dunke is in range and got lucky.

What is the legitimate way of damaging it?

The belly.

its the belly? i thought it was only the tail half. still turn radius just feels unnatural for the thing. even with the water scooter (never remember what its called) it turns just as fast. and the fact you have to stop, aim, pause, shoot or else you just dont fire at all, makes it nearly impossible to hit. i have killed a few, but all of them take just tanking damage and sleep dart.

It's the most difficult respawning fish in the game. I'm fine with how they balanced it. You can easily cheese it with the right equipment, like Squid Ink, which will blind it and allow you to get underneath it to tranq it.

I immediately thought to aim for a soft underbelly after my first attack was deflected. It's also weak to explosives, which is where the Sticky Bomb Gun can help.

If you're going after one of these, I recommend having a Salvage Drone handy. Seems a waste to kill it.
AquaX Jul 5, 2023 @ 8:17pm
It is not too hard to beat as you think. It normally does 1 short ram follow by a long straight ram. With enough spacing, you are suppose to dive under it right when it about to do its long ram so it will just be right over you enough to fire 1 shot at it.

For anyone wondering, I mainly use the tranq harpoon hook since my weapon has always been the sniper rifle. Just do NOT be overweight because you won't have to speed or maneuverability to dodge.

Thing is weak.
I picked up some random flame harpoon and slaughtered it really easy the only time I've actually gone to kill it.

The shark is a joke compared to the Mako.

This. Mako was my only non-boss death. That thing gets on you and doesn't quit.
