What's the point of guns?

The net gun and tranq gun are fine, but what's the point of any of the other guns? It basically only lets you kill the slightly larger sharks and stuff but at a two star rating.

Cobra has a conversation line that implies that you -should- be able to somehow kill larger prey with the guns, but you need to be 'careful' and look out for when they're shaking or bleeding.

I haven't seen a way (as far in as chapter 5) to be able to use guns in any meaningful way.

Like, sure, get one or two star fish. OR you can just use the net gun and get three stars for max fish flesh and just harpoon anything dangerous.

Range I guess, sometimes aiming with a gun from far away is safer than the harpoon's range

Some things simply cannot be netted until you get access to the more powerful nets that you can buy as you get further into the game. A good portion of the fish until you get the most powerful nets, the only way to get them is to kill them with a gun or harpoon, shoot them with a net then they will bust right the hell out of it. If you don't use your gun or harpoon you simply will not have access to those species as ingredients until you get enough resources to built the most powerful nets.

I mean if that is the way you want to play, that's fine, dont use those fish til you can net them, but I like to get max fish every dive and have wide variety, not simply the ones my net is powerful enough to nab.

The biggest use of guns, beyond generally doing more damage, is the lack of attack lag against sharks and other large prey which are usually worth more to sell in various dishes. Since a harpoon doesn't sink into a shark, you have to reel it back in and you can get hit during boss fights or shark fights. 2 stars versus 3 is meaningless, especially when you still get a lot of meat from the large fish you're hunting with guns. You're also likely to run out of drones before you're done swimming (I use tranq version of rifle to get best of both worlds. Decent enough damage and chance to knock out such that I can drone them up. Only time i don't is boss battles I know are coming and then it's upgraded rifle time)

Assuming you have the drone unlocked. And then it has limited uses which sucks.

When I beat the game, I didn't even have close to half the gun upgrades unlocked. The tranq gun and the upgraded net gun are by far more useful than anything else.

Either the game needs to have more threatening enemies that can't be tranquilized/netted thus ONLY killable, or the harpoon damage needs to be nerfed hard.

Amazing game otherwise though.

If they wanted to make guns more useful, they could give a few of the tougher sharks some armor vs harpoons specifically to reduce the damage it does.

Normally I can just carry harpoon & dart gun and just take out sharks with harpoon. Sometimes I will want a gun if the shark is doing too much damage to me.

I find the attack lag after a harpoon attack leads to me getting hit more rather than just shooting twice in that time.

They save time but if you learn the shark patterns, which isn't really hard tbh, the harpoon is basically a mid-tier gun with infinite ammo. I just think guns are the weakest element of design in this otherwise great game.
