Getting fish crafting parts from fish

I'm trying to get the final net gun upgrade, and I need 3 Pelican Eel Skins. I have one, and I'm not 100% sure how I got it. I know the location of one Pelican Eel, and I've been catching it every time I dive. It seems that if I catch fish alive and unharmed, I have a higher chance of getting bonus crafting parts from them. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know what the chances of getting the craft-able fish parts are?

I only encountered one pelican eel, and I got 2 skins with the regular harpoon. I rarely ever get fish parts though.

Can confirm, Merc-ing them when i saw them did not yield the skin not even once, put them to sleep accidentally once and i got the skin. Went back 3 times more with a dart gun and got 2 skins out of 3. I'm positive fish parts are from 3 star catches

The harpoon does leave them alive if you catch them in the quick time event thing (press the buttons or jiggle the joy stick). I bet you normally kill fish then?

For sure, this tracks with what I was feeling. I'll try the tranquilizer gun against it. I was using the Large net gun and it was breaking out. I do have a tranquilizer rifle that was somewhat successful, but the tranquilizer gun is smarter. Thanks!

How do you get a high rating on the bigger fish? I need giant travelly fins, and I can't seem to collect them without killing them.

You got yellow drone upgrade later that can bring whole large fish up water, (max 3 use per dive)

u can find a tranq harpoon head in chests, and the steel net u can buy from cobra on the boat. both will let u catch one alive in mint condition

edit: u do need a drone charge to bring it to the surface though

Hmm, I just tranqed 7 cuttlefish, and I got nothing. I need the parts for an upgrade.

3 star fish might increase the chance, but the RNG itself can be really one-sided sometimes.
I farmed like 30 cuttlefish, all dart-gunned (3 star) yet had no skin drop.
Meanwhile I'm swimming in shark teeth which I had difficulty farming during early access version...

I'm pretty sure there is a bug where no parts will drop. I had a run where I didn't get a single drop out of 100+ sleep dart catches, so I alt+F4 and tried again, and started getting regular drops.

Do you know if that only work when you alt+F4 quit? i'm having trouble with a few certain fish not spawning in the dive at all. I have dived over 70 times since and still they are missing.

Parts seem to be just purely RNG. You can get em from harpooning as well as tranqing, even with things like Cuttlefish. I don't know if you have a higher chance at a 3 star or what, but I know i've gotten Giant Trevally Fins and Cuttlefish Skins and such from 2 star catches.

Over the course of the game I've probably killed over 50 cuttlefish and 10 to 15 giant trevally, and I"ve never got a single part. You can't progress without these, so it's frustrating.

After hours of play I can say that you can get skin parts from 2 star catches, but you are operating with a lower chance to acquire them. Im going to use the chickens as an example here (10% for white 40% for brown and 70% for black) it would be fair to assume they use something akin to this for your chances of acquiring fish fragments when catching them. Making you feel like it's only possible when getting a 3 star. and to you Ricardo I have definately gotten my trevally fins from harpoons but I too feel your pain. and after countless cuttlefish I have only crafted my tranq sniper, due to my love hate relationship with RNGeesus

if you tranq and catch them you have the highest chance of getting parts to drop. I'm also after trevally fins and killing them normally doesn't yield anything.

There doesn't seem to be a guaranteed way to make parts drop just random rolls.
