How Do You Hurt The Squid?

The game's been a blast all the way up until having to beat(? maybe?) the squid...

No shot with the rifle seems to do any damage, if I swim close enough I encounter an invisible wall & can't get the box, but any shot doesn't seem to do any damage, either. I can shoot maybe once or twice before getting shot to the other side, then spend the time swimming back, shoot in two different locations to see if those areas might cause damage, and repeat.

I've even started using a trainer to give me unlimited ammo so I don't have to keep quitting after shooting 24 shots, but after 20 minutes with no hint as to what I should be doing with the rifle, I'm ready to just throw in the towel and play something else.

The fact that I couldn't find any other threads about this, though is making me wonder if maybe the "hints" about the rifle are to try to throw you off? Do you need to find bombs or something? What am I doing wrong?

You're supposed to shoot it in the eye, then it pushes you backwards, and you move close to it and repeat until dead.

Is there any indication that he's hurt when you shoot him in the eye? That was where I started, but then started shooting elsewhere when that didn't seem to do anything.

Ok, looks like I just ran into a bug - since posting this, I'd quit the game for the first time today (like I said, tons of fun!), and when I came back in and eventually went back to the squid, it was VERY obvious when you hit it in the vulnerable place (the eye).

Something funky was happening during that last session and the hits to the eye didn't seem to be registering.

Which is actually bad news, because now I'm probably not going to bed tonight...

Thanks for following up. Ran into the same thing. It fixed on just leaving the area and coming back. This starts the fight over and it wasn't glitched that time.
