Virulent Zombie gains HP with every magic damage dealt. So if you have a few magic damage dealers, like the Nether Warden (deals magic damage equal to HP at combat start), the zombie can easily hit nearly 1000 health before the first turn actually begins.
My current run has two max level Nether Wardens, with an Energy Echoer copying their activation. I have a spell that has Combat Start abilities activate a second time at the end of the first turn. So I blow up the board before the battle really begins.
