Stun baton quest glitch

During the quest to help Reaper I was given the task to get a stun baton. When I returned with it and tried to hand it over to the machinist(?) there was no such interaction available, only the (unlocked) resource conversion ones.
At that point I saved and exited, and restarted, at which time the character shows the indication that it wants to speak.
It can be noted that receiving the quest and acquiring the item was performed in a single game session, and upon returning to the prison block I immediately went to deliver the item.
Thus, it might be that the status is updated only upon loading the game and starting a new day, rather than returning to the prison block.
