First few 'standard' runs were the Downfall (top to bottom) format? Was this a bug?

Last night I played Downfall for the first time, did two runs as the Hermit, and I noticed that I was going Top to Bottom, culminating in a fight against The Silent. I thought this was odd; I'd watched someone stream Downfall before and thought Hermit went bottom to top like normal and just the 'Downfall' mode where you play as bosses went top to bottom. The Merchant had his enemy behaviour too.

I started an Ironclad run and noticed I was, again, going top to bottom. Closed the game and figured 'oh, so they changed it so that all of Downfall is this format now'.

Came back today, started a Hermit run and...I'm going bottom to top like I initially expected?

Is it set up so that the first few runs are top to bottom just to introduce players to the concept?

when starting a run you can choose wether you want a normal run or a downfall run. depending on the mod configuration however you can use normal characters in downfall runs and bosses in normal runs. it seems to me that you are somehow skipping the part where you choose the type of run you want with the type of run being chosen for you (wich would be a bug unless you just never noticed the option and just skipped it or something)

The "depending on the mode configuration" is not clear. I searched for the config file, but at least on my mac I could not find it - neither in the local folder for Downfall, nor in the folder where STS is installed (including the mac-typical "opening" of the app folders).
Do you have a hint where this config is?

I can select normal or downfall mode for a new run, but then there is only normal chars on normal runs and the new bosses only on downfall runs. And like WarMom I experienced that I could play Ironclad downwards and after that he went only upwards. There is this config entry in some config file, but I cannot find the location and/or format of the file to make/change that entry.

Please hint! ;-)
