No, the similarities are only superficial. Go (also known as Baduk or Weiqi) is at least a few thousand years old and is culturally closer to something like Chess than it is to modern board games.

Not even close. Go is legitimately the most complex strategic board game in existence. There is a reason why Google chose Go as the last remaining challenge to defeat before declaring A.I. supremacy in gaming.

The rules are simple, but the sheer variety of situations unfolding from that simple set of rules is simply jaw-dropping. Chess has been praised as the most symbolic game of intellect in the west for so long, but technically speaking from culturally neutral perspective, Go is orders of magnitude more complex and easier to learn than Chess is.
