How to get onto continent without taking a port

The only way i know to get on an island is to attack a port on the island, even a friendly port.
But the AI is jumping onto Islands without taking the port.

Can player do this too??

thanks that sorts out getting onto friendly port without a fight.
But the AI is able to get into enemy port without a fight but i cant do that

The AI just lands on island and walks right passed the army in garrison to go further into the island.

can the player do this.
