Unable to do Direct Control or Command Troops

For some reason, I am unable to do direct control or command units. I have changed keybindings however I am always stuck playing as whatever unit I spawn as until I get killed and have to respawn. Its difficult to understand the game without there being a tutorial or guide.

To go to Drone view / Map view Press M
to go to another unit follow these steps:
1) Press the number of the squad you want to take direct control off
2) once selected press F to open the command wheel
3) select the Gamepad icon for Direct Control
4) select the unit (vehicle or infantry) to go into FPS mode on that unit.
