Okay. So I've found out pretty much all the words and I've poked around in that hidden room while both staying hidden and coming out to protect the girl (I discovered this mostly because I was specifically told not to touch it. so... Yea. Go enjoy your book. Ima snoop.)

But regardless nothing changes and things still keep going. What am I not doing?

I think it depends on what word you say on day 7. I got two different responses from saying "death" and her name, and I also know that whether or not you open the secret dungeon on that run changes this as well. Happy hunting!
