It's really VERY difficult to convince my friends to buy a game like this.
If you're worried about not being able to play with friends, matchmaking exists to allow you to solo queue. There will also be a story mode, though the extent of that might be limited
The online only modes, such as Co-op quests, Free Quests and Raid Quests, can be played any time while online, and if you can't find a full 20 people while match making or if you have 3 friends and it's taking forever to find 17 other people it will fill it with AI bots after X amount of time waiting in queue.
As far as I'm aware though every time the devs have talked about those 3 online modes, they have said an internet connection and being online will be required to play them, even if you queue up with bots.
The more concerns are on the way. The quality of AI of the bots is also a reason for being afraid of possibly ruined game experience.
