Favorite starting area
I know there are several different favorites for bases, but what's a good first town area to start the game and begin looting

we are on island , access only via bridge
Haha... I mean the four game starting regions: Dannemora, Lyon Mt, Redford, or Saranac? Does anyone have a strong preference?
saranac is nice and spread out. Small town.

And it has an archery shop next to the church. The town maintenance depot is FULL of tools too.

There's a very nice two story house directly north of the church. Makes (to me) a great starting base area. The stairs seem to confuse zombie hordes. I got a surprise horde, made it upstairs after taking damage and they could not path up the stairs.

As a side note, when you first enter the house it's FULL of garbage. Like a team of hobos squatted in it. But it can ALL be cleaned up. Even the dirty newspapers and trash on the floor. Best feature in the whole game.
I chose Dannemora. I have a warehouse converted into a base not far from the prison. The prison has some of the best loot in the game, such as auto shotguns, tons of anmmo, gun mods and the like. There are many military crates there that need 75 lock pick to open but there are loads of others that are much easier to pick. There are many useful shops there and a factory complex with great crafting related loot, farming etc. There is an archery shop in the area and military loot in the graveyard. Amazing area for a base.

Right up until winter, and the lake freezes and the dead walk on water :/

i was worried about this as well, but the only hordes that have come for me in winter have come across the bridge. ...So far.
The noise source that I believe started the horde was my ore crusher, which is set much closer to the dock than to the bridge.
Has anyone even reached winter yet to test out this "they walk across the ice" theory?
I started in Saranac

They can spawn on the ice, usually close to unclaimed land, but i've never had a horde come across the ice.

...So far.
high noon plaza, but med way when power and water goes out, i wanted something big, i got the school bus garage , its a total takeover, trick is to park the school bus in the field below, not destroy them , as they respawn in the garage lot, that is a super fun place, got 3 building, 1 for mass farming, 1 for a garage, 1 for a living space, food cooking, etc
I'm not familiar with all the areas yet, but as of now, Dannemora.

The massive power plant, the prison, and many buildings full of high tier tools.
