Is joining an alliance instead of making one worth it?
Been trying to get my footing in this game, and so far so good, with one glaring exception: I get invited to alliances early on in the game as I start building up my army, and wanting to have some mutual defense, I accept.

The problem is the guy in charge of the alliance then goes on to not bother adding anyone else to the alliance, and as a member instead of the leader I can't go do that myself. So when the unholy horde comes around the only people able to lend support are myself and one other kingdom with ~10 people in it, nowhere near enough.

Is there any good reason to join alliances early? Or should I start telling them no and asking them to join me instead?

I ran into the same issues as you in one of my previous runs... so I never accept invitations into their alliances anymore. Just stay independent, lead your own alliance or just sign a peace treaty with them to take some heat off. Rushing into early wars is also pointless as they will simply rebel the moment they can see any weakness.

So just chill, defend yourself and build up your economy and tech.

You can't really tell them no, if you want to be the leader you have to wait for the invitation to expire ^sigh^

Update: I decided to stay out of alliances for awhile while I build myself up. When I was ready to start looking beyond my own borders all my neighbors was already in alliances. SIGH.

In my current run, I have been continually expanding my army as quickly as possible (I had the feeling that manpower was the key... so the main thing is that you have more soldiers than the person I want to invite into the alliance. I think weapons are secondary), and I have gradually added independent empires to my alliance.
I also had the problem in previous runs that everyone was already in some kind of alliance.
I now have 6 empires in my alliance. Nobody is causing problems... apart from a few arguments that I have to settle.
I only have one problem... I will soon be attacked by a large army of looters who have a very large and strong army. I get the message that 5 of my 6 allies will definitely support me and that it is time to ask them for support.
But I can't find a way to do this. I haven't found any buttons in the interaction menu that I can use to trigger this.

Generally they just show up when someone is threatening you, you don't actually have to ask. Look out for armies travelling to your town or you will have an icon with a dude and a shield above your town if they are already there.

There is a way I know to break an alliance.. it's by spreading bad rumors between those two, but keep good relations to both even if it's by paying 200 gold. Eventually they will break, this is your time to invite them to your alliance if your relation with them is good.. like above 50 they will accept. Now after they accept you spread good rumors ( praise ) between those two, you don't want your alliance member fight each other. For early game, I am suggesting to invite those with same culture like Varn with Varn etc..

I'm not an expert or anything but alliances seem like a bad way to go. Generally it's a good option if you're out of viable alternatives. In my current run that is really stable and been going for a few generations, being a Suzerain is much more preferable.

You just have to butter them up before leaving the alliance to absorb the hit to opinion.

They are not bad if you're super weak vs other neighbors for whatever reason.

You can scheme if you have the right lord with a good skill. This way, you can incite a rebellion or even assassinate the king... And when that happens, the alliance will dissolve, giving you a chance to create your own.

You can join alliance and suddenly have 10 trade deal opportunities so its pretty nice for that, but if you are too weak others can demand neutrality from you under threat of force.

U can just withdrawn from the alliance. DOnt need all the funny thing. Find the alliance leader. there is an option to withdraw

It's an interesting question!
because as far as I understand to beat the game so far , you need to be the leader of 12 free nations or to have 12 vassals.

So if you join someone else alliance, it's basically just temporary because you can't win by being with someone else.

Another question I was wondering is, it seems better to have vassals, they pay tribute and other things making you stronger and richer.
But what's the advance of having free nations instead?
You can't attack any other nations, and the ones with you they don't make you richer, so what's the point??
