You don't need a prison ward to have prisoners. It just boosts their happiness so they're less likely to try to escape or revolt, but early in the game they don't really try anyway.
You can't feed them without one. They starve to death unless you sell them to the church.
I always try and have one high INT high Teacher that does all the study and use them to teach the kids which passes the techs onto the kids. They pretty much only study teach and wise talk. Then i focus the kids on reading books the teacher doesn't know. That way usually by the time they grow up they usually know almost all the techs.
And when the kid leaves because your slots are full, you lose the knowledge... Happens all the time in my games till i stopped letting kids read books
I do believe the devs made them hang around as a "guest" now however so you have longer to kick someone out.
They recently patched it so free lords always have a bit of management skill too so when I needed to free a lord to educate a child i ended up recruiting a free lord and had a management 15 child that was starred in it before he was even old enough for a title.
