Ship editor?

When you have built a ship how do you save it.
Also I noticed when the dev's were making a ship they had other tools such as triangle shapes. Don't we get the full editor then?

Press escape and "export ship". You cannot play regular game with ships you made using infinite resources, for now or as far as I know.
You can make triangles by rotating different elements using R. Its a bit confusing when you start but not terrible.

What happens to my ship when I export it? I know where it goes when you export to Steam, but where does it go when just exporting it?
I thought when I created a ship I would be able to fly it you see.

Its saved as a file to (for example):
C:\Users\(user)\AppData\Local\Introversion\LastStarship\ships

So I am not really seeing the point in creating ships that you cannot do anything with. I don't even know if I can build on my science vessel or have to buy one that's for sale in star systems.
It's a little confusing when you don't know how.
