not sure how to progress in The Last One and Then Another

I get up until I speak to the fish eating cake. Then I come back out and interact with the writhing blob, it says "........" a few times, then nothing happens/changes, and I don't know how I'm supposed to progress any further. Nothing is illuminated other than where I just came from and the blob, but I've tried rolling around to find anywhere else to go/anything else to do, to no avail. I've tried restarting the game but nothing changes.
How do you progress from here?

it wont let me? I couldn't consume the fish in the first room either. am I missing something?

Either you're too small, or you're not holding the consume button

Aah, hadn't realized I was supposed to hold the button - I was mashing it wondering why nothing was happening lol. Thanks!
