And you have to connect the areas first before things appear from other players. So when you enter a new area it will be empty at first. And if something is stupid you can always remove it.
About the roads, it's not so black-and-white, it's not like if other people build the whole road, you'll see it in your game too. Once you start, every player is allocated a certain amount of completion, and once you complete your road in your game, it doesn't complete someone else's, it just helps them. If you wait until other people complete the road on their own, it'll take a very long time.
What really helps are structures (bridges, ladders) people leave around. You'll see more of them during the first 10 hours, while later on you'll usually see signs hinting on what you should do, instead of completed structures.
If you decide to play in offline and feel very bored or too hard - you can always turn online mode.
For your first time playing you should play online.
However the game is way way better offline. It can get a little lonely if you are used to the online experience.
Oh and play on Very Hard; the game is already stupidly easy.
