Generally though they're not practically useful in most situations, but that's true for other constructions too ... jump ramps, cargo cannons generally are not very helpful, but can be occasionally...
someone has placed a watchtower basically right next to the guy i was looking for, so it acted as a huge landmark to save me from wandering in that area for 10 minutes during snowfall^^
Nevertheless, Director's Cut has introduced so many gadgets that decrease the game's difficulty, that their impact in the gameplay has been reduced. I personally haven't really built more than a couple in the entire gamethrough.
