What happens if you buy the upgrade without the original game
I have the original game but I'm curious if it would let you buy the upgrade without the game.

FYI, you absolutely DO see the upgrade option regardless of whether the game is installed. If fact, even if you aren't logged in, it's there.

Also, I have the original/base game. I was able to put the full price ($40 usd) Director's Cut in my cart, but I was not able move on to payment options, I got an error instead. I then removed that and put the upgrade ($10 usd) Director's Cut in my cart, and I was able to move on to payment options. No error.

I don't have a Steam account without the original/base game to test with, but based on the above, I assume if you try to purchase the upgrade without owning the origina/base, you'll get a similar error on checkout.

You can't buy the $10 upgrade without owning the original game.

You will need to have the original game installed in order to get the upgrade pricing, at least that is what they wrote on the Director's cut page.

If i visit the storage page without signing in the option to buy it is still there unless it just doesn't let you

The option is there yes. But unless they majorly screwed up the store page, you can't buy it without owning the original.

Now the real question is whether it would let me pay the full price

...why wouldn't it?

Yeah it will charge you the full price, rather than the upgrade price. If steam detects you having the original game. Then a second purchase option which is the upgrade will be given.

because it should direct to the upgrade automatically unless for some reason someone wants to pay more when they can pay less

Exactly why there's a second option for those who own the base game.

Buy DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT UPGRADE
For customers who have purchased DEATH STRANDING.
(This only appears when steam detects you having the game installed/owned)

and

Buy DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT
For customers who have not previously purchased DEATH STRANDING.

Are you under the impression that director's cut requires the base game or something? It's a stand alone game. The discount is just there for people like me who own the original to get the new content for less money.

In theory yes, but what if someone with the game tries to pay the full price

Then they'll pay full price.

I've yet to see a business that wouldn't let you pay more if you really wanted to.

Death Stranding Director's Cut is separate from the base game, so regardless on whatever you paid, you get two different games on your library, one is the original and the other is the director's cut.

When I get the 'less than 10.00 cut' for the entire game I'll be back.
