Failed to create the DirectX device error

I recently tried to run Defence Grid on my ultrabook, in the past it has run with no issues. I am now getting the following error when I try to launch it: "Failed to create the DirectX device"

I can get it to run in windowed mode by editing the configuration file in the game dir, but I can’t get to go full screen. Some other DirectX games work but its kinda random caus others have a similar issue.

I have an Intel pro 4000 GPU, I’ve got the latest drivers (which is the same ones I was using to run defence grid previously), run the latest updates for windows 8 pro 64-bit, tried to manually install the latest DirectX version and also manually uninstalled and reinstalled the GPU drivers (which also involved deleting the driver itself from the system).

Any ideas?

got the latest drivers from your laptop manufactors side or intel? don't know if it will fix your problem, but there are a lot of people in the saints row 3 thread with issues in the game - installing the latest intel drivers fixed their problems.

I fixed the issue a while ago, it turns out when I plugged a USB driven monitor into my system, it installed some drivers and management software etc (unfortunately I don’t remember its name). This was interfering with any full screen DirectX 9 game. I went through programs and features and uninstalled it, restarted my computer and then it was all fixed.

[EDIT: Never mind... I discovered that I was mistaken. I did NOT have the most recent NVIDIA drivers for my system, after all. When I updated the drivers this morning, the program runs with no errors. My drivers were a whole two months out-of-date! Makes a difference, though.]

This same issue has appeared on my system, now. I have played 90+ hours of Defense Grid in the past five months, but starting about three weeks ago, the game won't run at all. A window appears with a centered dialog box saying "Failed to create the DirectX Device", with an "OK" button. Pressing the button causes the window to close.

The problem seemed to be caused by an update to the operating system, from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, but this is mere speculation on my part.

I have tried all the suggestions in this thread, and on all other threads I could find for this type of problem. I have re-installed the game from Steam. Modifying the config.ini file doesn't make any difference, as far as I can tell.

I am running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) on an Intel i7 processor, using an NVIDIA GeForce GT 745A graphics processor and DirectX runtime version 11.0. All drivers are up-to-date. I am not able to install DirectX version 9 separately--the operating system seems to block this.

I certainly would appreciate any suggestions that you may have. I miss playing the game!
