2) Timing is key in placing towers.
3) Juggling is a big time score booster if you can master the technique.
4) Using backspace sometimes to correct a mistake or a creep slipping by.
5) Earning interest on the resources you have accumulated by holding off and spending as little as possible.
6) Learning the strengths and weaknesses of the towers and creeps. Each tower has a creep it defeats easily and each creep has towers that cant do much to it.
7) Watch some Youtube vids if you find some maps difficult.
8) Just have fun and learn from each map and use more advanced strats as you can.
9) Find chokepoints on the maps and build killzones with command towers.
This is a general list and there are many variations on some maps. Experiment and try different builds.

Other than that practice and lots of it. And measure yourself against other good players. Good luck :)
My tips are this:
1. Upgrade your towers
You'll be amazed how much better a Red Tower is compared to its Green counterpart. Focusing on upgrading well positioned towers, instead of adding tons of low powered ones, made a huge difference to my game. So focus on upgrading instead of litering the levels with guns.
2. Position your towers well -- usually as close to the core as you can.
You get high scores by amassing resources -- and you gain interest on resources when all your cores are in their housing. With this in mind it's best to keep the cores in their housing as much as possible... and that's very difficult to do when they're miles away, so put your guns close to the cores.
The other reason to place all your guns as close to the cores as much as possible is because the aliens will pass them twice very quickly, which means your guns are inflicting twice as much damage almost immediately: Once as they pass to get a core, and again once they have one as moment later.
3. You can kill most things with Guns
You'd be amazed how much damage a couple of Red Guns can do. My levels are mostly filled with Guns. Some exceptions are:
Concussion -- Brilliant for groups of aliens, and there's nearly always groups of aliens.
Missile -- Brilliant for flying aliens in later levels.
Temporal -- There's no subsitute for slowing down aliens so your guns can do more damage. Always worth investing in well placed ones.
Command -- If you're going for a highscore, this will help by boosting the amount of resources you get for each kill. Not usually necessary if you're just going to complete the level with a decent score, though.
Final tip if you're going for the absolute best high score you can: Sell your weaponry at the end of the level, as soon as you know it's safe to do so. If you have all your cores, you'll accrue interest while the end-game dialogue plays out. Can be useful if that extra (if small) boost on a high score.
Good luck!
