Also, what items are you trying to repair? My understanding is that it repairs items that are intact. It doesn't repair anything that is broken into multiple pieces (i.e., pump) -- you have to use a Welder for those parts.
I recommend only putting things in there you find yourself often needing. You can upgrade a few trees for the rebreather, or motors/bulbs but anything else is just going to take away from the things you are going to regularly end up buying anyway.
Either way, don't expect a lot from it. You will save/earn so much more money from the welder and definitely the chonker. Getting the chonker early in a run makes repairing/welding a moot point since you earn so much money doesn't matter anymore.n
Alright I tested a thing and it seems if you have non-broken items in the repair bin they can be randomly selected to be "repaired" despite not being broken. So that was the issue.
Wilted rebreather trees will all regenerate overnight. They don't need repair storage.
Yeah, I just found that out. I'm not sure if that is intentional but gas filters also fix themselves overnight
Upgrades are mostly for precise things.
The repair stuff is for a certain path in the game if you can't find the precise ship or just if you don't want that certain path to make you take a fine.
Welder is mostly for ftl cores.
In particular, it can choose fuel tanks - which when they get 'repaired', will now show empty, even if they have fuel in them, and trying to add fuel to them afterward will just blow them up, so watch out for those and don't store them there
