The cult storyline baffles me, it feels like a puzzle with not enough moving parts. The book is confusing, I'm trying to interact with anything and it gets me nowhere.

Ok, firts ritual. I made the candles, I set them up, star lit up, nothing happened.

I tried to make an offspring, probably got it wrong, pinned it to the left spire. Lit the star. Nothing happened. The offspring is still there and I cannot grab it back.

And there's something about a switch? What ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ switch?

Please shine some light on this for me, I'm one step away from abandoning the run because I honestly see nothing else I can do to move this forward.

Are you doing the enthraling alter part? If so, then the following things are what you needed to do.
1. print the alpha sigil and put it in front of the alter.(check printer section)
2. prepare 3 candles made from standard wax and 2 candles made from wax imbued with the chemical shown on the page right.(first make the correct chemical with foul alchemy, then imbue it into wax using ritual table)
3. place them with the corresponding position as the image.
4. light the candles as the following order: ADBCE. Between each has ~0.5s delay.
5. if you done it right, you will see the sigil emerging through the candles.
The rest should be easy for you. If you still feel stuck, I'll try my best to help you.

If the timing is getting you, you can cheat it a little. Burn the candles down to little nubs and snuff them. Then, you can simply relight them as the sigil fills to them and you're aces!

OK, I missed the printed sigil.

Btw is it just me or there's now way to remove string from the altar? I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the arrangement and ended up restarting the game and starting again because nothing I tried could reset it.

If it's the thing that can make different type of wax. I think you just need to click on the nails with the string tool.

I believe you need to undo the string by right clicking the nails.

You don't right click. You take the string tool and click on the last nail you clicked (it will change on hover to indicate it's the correct nail to untie). You then need to backtrack and untie each knot.
