Whats up with Gumballs...

... for the FTL Backend?
Am I just supposed to draw random Gumballs from the machine till I get some that fit one of the color configs the Backend offers? Or am I missing something?
Also, if thats actually the case, how does anyone on frantic mode even deal with that?
I really hope I´m missing something, otherwise this really is just an annoying and cumbersome mechanic.
