Is there just something I dont get about Pipebombs?
Figured I'd ask because this, particularly my basicly guaranteed death, is becomming a rather frequent source of annoyance given how often the game seems to throw a forced ship (in the sense that there's litterally no other option nor does a reroll work) at me with pipebombs on day 3.

From what I understand of the manual, say this is the wire setup.
Plain. Plain. Dual. Plain
So judging by the diagram I should therefore cut all 4 (?)

But I swear it's like the game throws me some kind of 50/50 cointoss because more often than not I still end up exploding, with only the occasional one where the bomb is correctly disarmed.

And this is before we get into something like what the hell to do if I'm dealing with, say, Plain, Stipe, Plain, Dual

It tells you the number of each wire type is irrelevant. You just need to find out which patterns are on the given bomb. From there, find the intersection on the Venn Diagram that corresponds to the patterns you have. Inside that spot you'll see a diagram of which of the four wires to cut.

So for your example of Plain, Stripe, Plain, Dual you would find the intersection of the Plain circle, the Stripe circle, and the Dual Circle.

Yeah I caught the bit about the ammount of each wire type being irrelevant (i.e, it's the same "process" for 3 Plain wires, as it is if you just have 1 Plain). But I'll freely conceede that perhaps I'm misinterperting the instructions, especially as someone who's ESL.

It's just feels like there's something I'm horrendously missunderstanding when 9 outof 10 times when I deal with the pipebombs, it ends with me dead when, as far as I know, I followed the diagram to the letter

Well, you're right that plain + dual wires means cut all four. But the diagram does work 100% when you follow it, there is no luck element. So you must be missing some detail about reading it.

The bomb defuse is forced on day three until you've cleared the whole job a couple of times.

does not work for me. I followed it exactly for the last three runs and it still exploads

It helps that I've played "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" but yeah no there's no luck or anything. You either followed instructions and cut the right wires or you didn't.
I got my only 3 pipe bombs (so far) right on first try.
which patterns are present? find part of diagram that contains only those.

I blew up a couple pipe bombs because it turns out I'm bad at reading Venn diagrams.

The sections in the farthest corners are for bombs with only one type of wire. Two wire types are in between. The smaller sections further in from those are for three wires. The pattern for all four wires is right in the middle.

Also this might be obvious, but the big solid wires that you can't cut don't count.

what do you do if there are two wire types and they are on opposite ends of the vin diagram

not a thing that will happen in gameplay without there being at least 1 more type on the bomb

As it turns out yeah I must've just been bad at reading venn diagrams, as I've now managed to get through the pipebombs at Day 3 several times

Also double check that you're not mixing up e.g. stripes and spirals
