What was the reason for dropping Ego engine?
Not trying to be inflammatory, I just never found out why Codies decided to switch to UE. Gonna miss all the little idiosyncracies from the Ego engine

Longer stages, etc. It was getting old.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Use search. Been answered many times. Even here on these steam forums.

But the two posters above cover it.

If you know what inflammatory is, you know what search is.

Oh, ok. Hopefully UE figures out the stutter they've had since ue4, cause longer rally is definitely a solid reason

*from user "Griffith* on another post

Engine development is indeed costly. If I remember correctly EGO-engine was developed together with Sony, but that has really been a while.

DiRT 2007 was the first one to utilize EGO and was extremely rough around all edges. By the time DiRT 3 came out they finally got the most out of the engine but also a next console generation was about to arrive which resulted in Codemasters struggling to keep up.

Generally all tracks were completely hand crafted while Unreal 4+5 offer a massive amount of automated tools to create more content in a shorter time. One of the reasons why tracks look a bit bland as they are not all handcrafted anymore.

With EGO they used also a lot of pre-rendered content for the tracks. This required a lot extra space oh your harddrive and also meant limited content at its time, also time consuming....
BUT... the result was always extremely high performance, no pop-in, smooth transitions, great view distance. EGO engine is a marvel in many ways but looks like it finally reached its limit in creating content and making large locations.

For GRID Legends and err one of the recent F1(23?) games they already stopped using pre-rendered content. Both are noticeably smaller in size than their predecessors due to that.
GRID Legends had a noticeable dip in quality for long distance rendering in backgrounds and lighting for foliage like trees was also weak.

For DiRT Rally 2.0 they also changed their approach to track creation a bit. Some of the new tracks were noticeably different made, not everything was hand made anymore for the new tracks, but nonetheless the engine reached its limits. The size of the game with all DLC is just soo massive.
ALSO... the lighting in DR2.0 was very often completely wrong while the light came from the left the textures showed light coming from the right. Unreal has tools for correcting that as well.

DiRT Rally 1 was the game where they really got all out of the engine that it could possibly offer without breaking anything while also being a passion project. One of those games that will always have a special place in many peoples hearts.

NOW...
the bigger question when they will switch to Unreal 5 as that is not only better optimized performance wise but also offers a lot more tools for higher details and production.
Nanite offers the possibility for infinite detail and the new lighting engine ( forgot how it was called ) gets closer to reality than ever before.

Engine wise Epic is currently killing it, but also other developers will profit from it. As far as I remember Capcom did when they created their RE-engine.

Anyway, with a yearly release of WRC it is just a matter of time until Unreal 5, better performance, better modeled tracks, better foliage, more handcrafted tracks, more and longer tracks.

Just think of this like the new DiRT 2007, the growing pains will stick a round for a while before it gets really good.

Can't wait how future WRC games will perform.
