On a side note, game is super fun. Love it.
There wasn't any word that it would be a launch patch, they said post-launch.
In the end, I tweaked the Engine INI file and that seems to have reduced it although it doesn't get rid of it completely.
If you want to try this then add the following, below the [Core.System] entries to the Engine INI file located at C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Local\WRC\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor:
[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.CreateShadersOnLoad=1
[SystemSettings]
r.CreateShadersOnLoad=1
r.ViewDistanceScale=2
r.MipMapLODBias=-2
r.StaticMeshLODDistanceScale=0.25
r.SkeletalMeshLODRadiusScale=0.25
r.SkeletalMeshLODBias=-2
foliage.LODDistanceScale=2
r.Shadow.DistanceScale=2
These tweaks reduce the LOD issues and double the draw distance, including shadows and foilage. This is obviously more demanding so your framerate will be lower.
also turn brighness down to 19 or 25 and the colors become much more balanced
The issue with pop in in EA WRC is due to a coding error, I believe. It will need to be fixed manually from Codies' end.
It can be temporarily circumvented somewhat by changing dynamic objects to medium. This prevents somewhat distant chunks of grass and such from popping in within 1 frame.
The draw distance will be reduced, but it will fade in smoothly, rather than pop.
Edit: You can keep everything else on ultra. Do not apply those changes to engine.ini. They work, but reduce your FPS heavily and do not fix the pop in problem.
This whole release seems like a beta. But the driving is "good" on the whole. Not a pure sim but truthful to it's roots, more like DR/DR2.0 than anything else, Dancing on ice in Monaco can be quite fun and life-like this time around - allthough DR2.0 allready did a mighty fine (but different) job of that before.
Stages are all brand-new creations as far as I can tell, much tighter roads to run through - but certain aspects of graphics and performance seem a bit flat and lacking compared to it's predecessor, largely due to the engine-change. And my personal nitpick is the co-driver audio: it sounds like trash compared to the previous games! Still serviceable - but a clear downgrade in quality!
Take a look at the insanely-high recommended specs they publish for the VR-people. If your system meets those, then I would say you are golden and you don't really need to think twice about the technical viability. Just a clear indication that this project does not achieve the technical maturity it would need to become a fan-favourite. Even the console-release had major problems - Then again: let's hope they get to grips with it for the next few years/seasons!
Good value at half-price. Not a confident full-price release as of yet!
