Is this game as bad as people say it is?
I'm genuinely thinking about picking it up on its sale price, but all the reviews have really put me off on it. For those who have actually played, is it really THAT bad?

Thanks in advance :)

Also, thinking about picking up Dragon Age Inquisition while it's on sale too. I played it a LONG time ago, but forgot most stuff about it lol.

It's not bad like that, it's fun to play and the reviewers are... it's hard to get a good read off a game when it's getting targeted by political groups who used to just hate gaming altogether and blame gamers for the ills of the world.

It's a fun game to play mechanically, especially if you enjoy fight mechanics and bleedover from multiplayer type games like MMOs. I used to play SWTOR and they must have had some of their devs helping with combat at some point.
The game starts off very linear and opens up as you go, the story and RPG aspect is there unless you want to run around being the type of character the main villains would have corrupted 'world doomed' in the first hour.

The character origins are fun as well and add some very enjoyable variation to playthroughs. Inquisition is very cheap so, if you feel like it but if you own Inquisition on EA's launcher with all the DLC, it's not worth a re-buy on Steam since I think you need its launcher- Veilguard doesn't need another launcher and is Denuvo free.

It's biggest weakness are the dialogues, your main character barely has any meaningful choices during dialogues and even tho the voice actors did a pretty good job it feels more like a Disney movie than a dark fantasy game for most of the time (there are some exceptions like act 3 starts to become really dark but before that it's rather rare). Game is full of side quests and some of them are sadly rather boring fetch quests while others are done well.

The complaints about wokeness are imo overblown, I'm for sure not a fan of them and some of these cutscenes actually feel immersion breaking but I wouldn't say that 5-10 minutes of cringe dialogues are enough to ruin the game.

Other than that the game is quite solid, was a bit disappointed that you can't control your companions but over all I did like the combat (that's highly subjective tho). Character creation and the world looks beautiful in my opinion. Not a fan of the loot system but it's okayish, being able to respec for free at all times is pretty nice however.

Among most DA games I'd say it's had some pretty hard choices if you like story immersion where character reactions can be just as important to a player, in some cases will fundamentally shape a characters personality, some people somehow take this as "There are no decisions to make" despite the hard choices like having to choose between a companion who dies or picking between traumatising another, and there is no magic third option to spare you from this like previous games

The combat is pretty fun and doesn't have you desperately pressing as many buttons and reading into multiple skills to button mash as much as the other games and you get the joy of two adorable side companions, Manfred and Assan, who I grew attached to

My negative is that there really wasn't much crossover from the previous games decisions, especially if you dislike Solas from DAI, there are references to the previous games at times but nothing really bold about choices

In all I got a good chunk of time out of the game because it resolved a lot of background mysteries and stories that's been building throughout the entire series

Yes, unfortunately, it is that bad.

It would be OK as a standalone game, but this is not a continuation of DA that we came to love.

Just curious, what did you hear about the game Exactly?

Not to me, no, I played 100+ hours and two playthroughs. I had so much fun with it. People like to use dialog and scenes out of context to get people to hate on the game with them. There are some with legit issues because the game is in no way perfect. However, I find the majority are here because either their favorite bro streamer didn't get a game code, they hate the LGBTQ+, or they dislike people who don't look like them.

The game has a mostly positive review by actual players and the majority of people like it. Based on what I've seen on Steam, Reddit, and Streamers. The game is fast paced, a condensed easy to follow open world, not as big as Inquisition, but bigger than Origins. Great companions with interesting stories, Great quests. Amazing fights and builds. Lore, and so much more.

I would suggest playing the free five hours demo on EA to get an idea of it. I loved it and all the lore and Solas stuff made me a very happy girl. ;p

I had fun with it but my expectations were pretty middle of the road and they weren't exceeded. I also seem to have missed out on a lot of the trolling and such from those who seem to be making a habit of moving from game to game doing it.

As a lightweight ARPG it works fine. It sags a bit in the middle if you're doing a lot of side questing as combat starts to get a little stale but picks up again for the final couple of chapters.

There's some clunky bits to how parts are written, feels like it's aimed at a younger audience than me perhaps, although my main criticism is characters lack that bit of nuance to really stand out. Game has a very upbeat vibe to it which kind of tramples over what darker themes are presented.

Certainly worth having a look at the 'demo' and seeing how you feel about it after the 5 hours.

It is not as bad as people make it out to be. I decided to get it and did not regret it. Already planning a 3rd playthrough after my second one.

I do not think i can go back to inquisition after playing this game. This game is just more convenient to play. Inquisition is too much grinding for me. Although inquisition has awesome characters. Leliana, Cassandra and Hawke is just so good.

IMO the game is quite fun. Some dialogue here and there in the beginning can be a bit campy but overall its fine. Combats a blast and the companions are interesting and fun to be around.

Inquisition is also a good buy for the current sale.

only if you never heard of Dragon Age before

it is basically a kids friendly revision of it.

So, as an update, I ended up buying the game and played the opening mission and then a little after.

So far, I think it's pretty fun, and it's clear from the get go the production value is quite high so it seems some effort was really put in on that front, and it runs really well to boot. It's been far too long since I've played anything Dragon Age wise so the story thus far is actually quite intriguing and I'm curious to see where it goes.

In regards to the companions, only met Harding, Varric, and Neve so far, I enjoy their company, and the dialogue hasn't been too off-putting as of yet, so that's way better than what I had been lead to believe.

I only have one ability so far combat wise, playing as a warrior, but it seems pretty fun up to this point, although it is quite simple, hoping a little more depth is added later on.

The one complaint I do have, and it's something that nearly made me request a refund, is how BAD the character creator is. I SWEAR, no matter what I did, I couldn't get a character to look like a halfway decent normal human being, they look so alien! I made a guy, and I wanted to make him look all big and burly, maybe somewhat of the face of Varric, but no matter what I do, he looks SUPER feminine, no makeup or ANYTHING like that. Eventually I got him to look OKAYish, but then in cutscenes and dialogue he started looking all feminine again lol, I normally wouldn't care how my character looks in a game, but it is so distracting here for some reason. Thank god you can change your appearance at any time in the game, that is one saving grace.

All in all, I know I'm just under two hours in, $38 for a game that just came out less than 2 months ago is a GREAT deal and I'm not disappointed with spending the money at all.

For those of you who mentioned LGBTQ stuff, full disclosure, I'm a conservative and I really don't care if it's in my games or not, if it's just a small part of a huge game, I don't care. I just don't like when it's forced upon me in some way or another. Perhaps later in the game it will be, but even if it is, I'm not going to let something like that stop me from enjoying what otherwise seems to be a fun game so far. And to those of whom the LGBTQ stuff appeals to, I'm glad it's there, for you, and everyone who wants to express themselves in whatever way you feel most comfortable. I've always been of the mindset that more options is better than having less, why criticize something for offering more y'know?

Thanks so much to everyone who commented on this thread, I really do appreciate it :)

Glad you got it and you're enjoying it!

But yeah it doesn't match what the "Big fuss" crowd have been trying to wail about, it's in all a pretty decent game if you just like playing video games for enjoyment

They've framed it as something that's "Absolutely in everyone's face" and honestly it's like 0.5% of the game in actual game play in what troubles them so much to raid the discussions putting it down
