Rook is a loser
No, I'm not trolling. I'm 13 hours in and the game feels like a slog because I feel like Rook, the player stand in, never gets a chance to actually succeed at anything. It's just crushing defeat after crushing defeat.

I get the story telling narrative of rising action, of "the night is darkest before the dawn" and I'm sure there is some redemption to come, but it is demoralising to go through 13 hours of gameplay knowing that no matter how well you play you are going to be forced to lose by the narrative. It starts from the very beginning with disrupting Solas' ritual (you succeed but let loose the elven gods), continues on with the dragon attack against Minrathous and Treviso (you can save one but the other gets devastated and one of your companions is pissy at you over it) and gets even worse at Weisshaupt. I've just gotten to the double dragon fight in the wetlands and even then Rook isn't allowed to be the hero, you have to get saved by the forces of whichever city you went to the aid of earlier in the game.

Is it too much in my epic fantasy game that I, the player, get to feel like the hero every once in a while?

Rook is part of a team that does heroic things, and keeps trying in spite of setbacks.

Even if Solas might be a liar... you should listen to some things he said ;)
Weisshaupt was more than they could hoped for. Survival including the local faction. They even killed an Archdemon there.

Overall Rook wins nearly everything... companion is "down", no matter what you tell them, they cheer up.
Faction gets beaten down? Rook finds the words and correct actions to bring them back onto their feet...

Its more like you cannot fail ever.
