5 hours in - what's the problem?
There's been so much drama around this game—YouTubers losing their minds over what they’re calling a “woke disaster,” sales tanking, and all the talk about LGBTQ stuff. I’ll admit, I jumped on the hate bandwagon at first too. But with all the hate it was getting, I figured I’d give it a shot and see for myself. Worst case, I could refund it after a couple of hours, right? Well, five hours in, and I’m actually having a blast. I created a character I genuinely like and enjoy playing, the world-building’s cool, the lore’s pretty interesting, and the diversity feels refreshing. Honestly, I haven’t really noticed much of the "woke agenda" that everyone’s complaining about. Maybe I'm just blind. Maybe that's a good thing?

I should mention though, I’ve never played the previous Dragon Age games, but I did enjoy Mass Effect Andromeda (one of the few, I guess). Dragon Age: Veilguard has a bit of that ME-A vibe mixed with some Souls-lite elements, plus a little of this and that. All in all, I’m enjoying it. It’s a good reminder that you shouldn’t just take YouTubers' rants at face value. Maybe try a game for yourself before jumping to conclusions. Lesson learned!

I don´t have a problem with gays and lesbians, i´m okay with that, its just a direction. But i have a problem if some woke people tries to make mentally ills and fantasy pronoms as normal so that everyone have to use it. wtf....

In a dark fantasy themed game ....lol

The "woke" complaints seem to come from a companion called Taash, you won't meet them for a while yet. I don't have any issues with the whole LBGTQ thing, I think its fine to include it in the game, and I don't feel like its pushed in my face like many other people say. But the term non-binary doesn't seem to fit in this dragon age kind of setting, I would have thought they'd have their own term for it.

I have literally just completed the Taash recruitment mission. After being on these forums for a while, I went in expecting to be awful, wall to wall ill-fitting propaganda.

And you know what.. it was fine. I quite like Taash so far. There is literally one single line, "You don't get to decide who I am" or something similar that rubbed me the wrong way, so I can see hints of where the complaints are coming from. But so far this is one line in nearly 25 hours of playtime.

Really don't see what all the fuss is about.

It's an artificial fuss - stoked by people who make a profit out of agitating people being suspectible for these kind of things. Every game release nowadays which includes any element like that fuels the money machine of agitators. They just have to release a video on asocial media about it and their sheeps fall into line - parroting all the clickbait layed out before them.

Just like the OP, both of you have to continue playing. Beat the game and then come back.

I'm over 60 hours into it at the moment, had the quests with Taash where the whole non-binary thing is mentioned a few times, and the reactions from their mother. But the way the people on the forums have been talking about it, its like its really thrust into your face and you can't escape it. It really isn't mentioned that much, sure the other companions start using they/them pronouns, but I don't see how this is as offensive as people keep saying it is.

From reading the forums, people make it sound like Taash is running around everywhere with a huge non-binary flag on their back and preaching to everyone about who they are, but its nothing like that.

It is. Everything about this character is her mommy issues and identity whining. It's not even a character. That part where we were supposed to investigate the dragons and the evanuris, and then she started whining out of nowhere, upon the realization that she's non-binary based on an off-screen conversation is the peak... of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ writing.

The worst part, you have no agency on how to talk to her. Even choosing the stoic option ("I.don't.care."), you gotta be supportive of this character, that the developer really wants you to like. And this is supposed to be a role-playing game.

But sure. Maybe you had so low expectations that nothing fazes you anymore. But I do think Taash is indeed the worst BioWare character ever made. But even without her (you don't have to complete her storyline to achieve any of the endings, at least there's that), the Veilguard writing is still lazy and crap.

I just find it funny that everyone piles on that character because its a non-binary topic. Other characters keep moaning about other things, because each companion's questline has a different topic. Lucanis always talks about his demon and the crows, Emerich talks about his fear of dying and quest for lichdom, Davrin keeps moaning about having to look after a griffin. No-one gets upset about these whining characters, just the non-binary one, because that's offensive!

Everyone is just so easily annoyed and upset these days, if something isn't made perfectly for your tastes, then the whole thing is crap and must be destroyed. Sure there are parts I'm not keen on in this game, but I am still enjoying it overall. Nothing is perfect. Like you said, you don't need to complete Taash's quests to complete the game, so if people don't like that character, don't hang out with them. Problem solved.

So much this. I e.g. hated Zevran back in DA:O - or any rogue style gameplay in any RPGs for that matter. Yet I'm just using the other options and I'm not burning down the dev for not 100% meeting my preferences.

I can even play DnD games without *gasp* relying on sneak attack characters. Weird stuff, I know. Live and let live seems is out of place these days. :steambored:

Right. But also, if you don't hang out with them, you don't get to say that they stay annoying and don't learn, grow or change as a character.

There's nothing wrong with it, a better question is what's wrong with people who's main hobby is hating on anything and anyone other than right wing white men.

Problem seems to boil down to:
They didn't hire a writer for their skill.
They hired a writer because they are trans.

Did BioWare hire a writer for the job or did BioWare hire a trans person for the job.
Not that trans people are automatically bad writers... just in this case well...

Not sure if what I am saying will make sense. Will probably be called a bigot.
So much copium, it's amazing. "I love the game, how dare you all criticize it? Every argument I don't like is nonsense." If you love the game, go play the game, stop trying to convince people on the internet.

If you hate the game, stop playing it and go play something else, stop trying to convince everyone to destroy the developer. Works both ways doesn't it?

Anyway, I'm off to go play the game again, I've had my fill of hate threads today. I'm enjoying the game, I'm sad that other people find it so offensive and terrible.

The reverse also applies. So many people hanging out on these forums the past 2 weeks to complain about something they don't want to play, incapable of understanding that other people like it. Or just unwilling to accept that people enjoy different things.

You could also go play something else you do like.
It's not a Dragon Age game, it's some piece of generic sloppy Traash. https://youtu.be/J90IcMrJGWs?si=84hs5ftawuoAGHlz

The combat is a generic, God of War/TLOU wannabe. The characters are all self-insert Seattle garbage that suffer from dialogue ventriloquism and are all unlikeable. Everyone's ugly, androgynous, not looking like proper men or women, etc. The writing is just complete garbage.

So in short it's not what you like to play and you are spending your sunday playing some other game? Noice!

I am playing Factorio, yes, but beyond that, you're clearly in the wrong topic. This man asked what is the problem with this game.

Oh and, you're forgetting that this game you supposedly "like", takes the place of a game that could have been good for the actual fans AND you. We could have had another Dragon Age Origins in terms of quality, but nope, they wasted 200-300m on this garbage.

Nobody would give a ♥♥♥♥ if Bioware just said "we're making a high fantasy Guardians of the Galaxy wannabe with God of War Ragnarok gameplay and it's not Dragon Age!", and honestly, nobody cares what you like, it's good for you, but the "modern audience" is taking games away from the fans instead.
