What is the practical purpose for barrels and crates in the game?
They can be destroyed, but are practically always empty. Shouldn't they sometimes contain some means of replenishing health, like fruit, etc...?

My experience was that at the beginning, they were almost always empty. They could be hiding something else behind them, though. And later on, there were raw materials and other things in them, which you picked up automatically, so you just might not notice it every time.

They sometimes hide things behind them. They also grow back. :D

Sometimes I get wood, the green barrels specifically contain healing potions, but the wooden barrels that are almost everywhere are practically always empty and since they are so numerous it feels like a filler of space that could be better utilised with some fruits in them or whatever I feel like.

-1

Reasons:
- Break 10 barrels so one give something is ultra boring and repetitive.
- Break 10 barrels so each give a tiny crap is annoying and exhausting.

True. So... not much point in breaking them.

There is no real practical purpose, they are set decoration for the most part, thankfully they are breakable so you can just roll/dodge through them.

They are clutter, used to hide gold pickups or switches, or to obscure hidden pathways, it should be obvious.

If you really want to min/max this crap you often get wood drops and some common trash items like kindling and other junk to sell, so smash all the barrels and boxes you can, sell the wood, 10 for 70g, sell the valuables for gold and rep, leave the area and come back and do it again to earn small amounts of gold to purchase everything from vendors

To give a sense of interactivity with the environment alongside the more obvious clutter loot. Sorry if that's too boringly practical for why the breakable things are there from jars to crates and barrels.

From my experience, they're mainly there to hide something. Not sure if this really is a thing or my brain just pick it up, but I get more materials from barrels and crates than jars which give valuable items more.

Apart from these, they're just there so my dark souls rolling habit feels alive again.

I have found items behind them or have got a very small amount of materials from them.

Hidden paths and materials. I usually find Heartwood or Imperial Weave cloth in them.

there are some brainless humans that have the feeling to smash, destroy, kill and murder everything in their path. those barrels and crates are for them.

I am pretty near the beginning, so that might explain it somewhat...
I have found it also depends where you break them. crates and barrels in market areas often have crystals and valuables in them.
