Is this game supposed to be linear?
I just recruited my first agent, and all I have experienced so far are narrow maps and linear quests. Is this all there is, or does it get better?

Yes, it's supposed to be linear.

Some maps are very linear. But the main exploration areas expand eventually, and many have circular and criss-crossing routes. Those parts only feel linear because the maps are simplistically drawn like that and you cannot run between trees or swim in water, but the experience ends up closer to real life where you generally stick to roads and don't often run into wild bushes or onto boulders for no reason. It even feels gross to run into dirty water. There aren't many wide open spaces, though.

From my experience (I've only been to Arlathan, Dock Town and Treviso), when you visit for story quests, it's pretty linear, yes. When you revisit the areas for character side-quests or free roam, it's much more open to exploration.
Kotor type maps compared to the MMOish open maps of Inquisition. nothing really new. You were running through narrow tunnel rooms even in the very first game.

Yeah, it's pretty linear. Some of the larger areas like Arlathan do open up fairly big and allow for decent exploration, but the quests you do within them tend to be set in specific areas that are fairly clearly tailored to those quests.

I hated Inquisition's use of open world design, so for me this was a big improvement; but if you're looking for wide open expanses full of nonlinear content, this may well disappoint.
