Rook is the most stupid nickname they could come up with.
There is alot of complains about this game but I wonder if I am alone in hating beeing called ROOK ? I
ts like the most stupid name they could come up with. Its just soooo annoying hearing it all the time, I hoped I would get another one down the way like they changed Herald to the Inquisitor. But no it just stuck all the way to the end and it was put down for ever in the annals of history that ROOK saved the world :steamfacepalm:

What a dumb, annoying, lame name.

I think this is like my biggest beef with the game.

Just stick with a cool surname like you always do next time plox, BioWare.

True, sounds like the name for a pet dog, like Rex, or Blitz.

Hard to compete with Warden/Champion/Inquisitor.

I think they choose it because it is gender "neutral" or something. Bad choices for them. Not my Bioware anymore anyway.
Tell me you've never played chess, without telling me you've never played chess.
"In the game we talk about Rook as a chess piece; the deep lore secret is 'Rook' actually, originally, comes from the bird" - John Epler

The goofy part is that if it's supposedly a nickname given to you by Varric when building his team... why does everybody in the continent address you that way rather than by whatever name you had before, of which you surely had. If they wanted to use a fixed name so that it'd simplify voice acting, it should have been a plausible real name that you had before.

I admit it does feel weird, especially when you are a Shadow Dragon and first go back to Dock Town to meet an old contact and they go "I hear it's rook now."
That caught me by surprise, I thought Rook was a long standing code name but then I wondered by the way he said it if I didn't change my name to Rook and why did I do that?

Given that each Background comes with a predetermined surname that you cant change, I would have much preferred it if they just recorded those select few names and depending what background you choose, that is what NPC's called you.

Rook is the name they were given by Varric when they started working with him a year ago. So they've been called Rook for a year now, and I guess it's to differenciate them from the person they were back in their faction. They've been kicked out for over a year, they're not a mournwatcher or a warden or whatever faction you chose anyway anymore. I guess Rook just went " new life, guess I can use a new name as well then "

I thought that "Rook" was short for "Rookie," as in being the newcomer to the team. I could be wrong.

SOAKED TO THE BONE!
Bad writting, that's pretty much it.
I didn't felt that bothered by it, but I agree, it sounded stupid to me as well.
I assumed it was due to the "hello fellow kids" vibes I got.
It was my understanding they call him Rook because of the chess piece, he just goes straight into everything without much planning.

And hey at least it's better than bloody "ghost" anyone who has ever seen a military nickname knows you don't get a nickname for doing something unless it was stupid/embarrassing/painful.

The explanation went by fast but reading this, it rings a bell and I think I was wrong.
