Even if you could, unlike DAO&2, the companions dont do good damage with their standard attacks. So being a support character is not optimal...or even close to it. You are intended to be a damage dealer.
And for it is worth the combat might not be your thing anymore but the rest I hope will be amazing still and ppl love it.

Not every game is made for everyone and they went for a more action based combat system and I am sure a lot of ppl will try and enjoy that. But let's not make this a rage topic.
