RPG Game that isn't RPG
Action RPG with too much action and not enough RPG.

its not really a party based game now thats true , its abit to early to tell how far the rpg has been dumbed down though

I don't think you added RPG in there enough.

Have you heard the RPG Elements have been dumbed down, that would be a let down. Not game breaking just a let down...

What is in your opinion an RPG and what was missing in DAI?

Because IMO DAI had everything that I consider a part of an RPG - you play as a character that you create. You develop this charater during the game through choice of abilities/talent points and equipment that you gather or create. You make decisions as this character that affect the story and the character development.

The same should apply to Veilguard. The combat makes it an ARPG instead of CRPG, but it is still an RPG.

Was Mass Effect an RPG? Because, so far, Veilguard looks like it's structured similarly to ME1-3.

There are very few ARPGs that I consider true RPGs. Skyrim, Fallout:NV, The Witcher Trilogy. That's just about it on the Western front. They're the only games that afford the player agency in the world through their stats and skills.

The biggest sin DA2 and I made as RPGs is divorcing the game from its tabletop roots with stat base and skills. Having a Charisma score, being able to finesse conversations, or being a rogue with trap finding, lockpicking, etc shouldn't have left.

Eastern ARPGs don't have that, but JRPGs were never about that and focused on making combat that rivaled the crunchiest of Western RPGs. The only modern game I'd consider a true ARPG aside from Elden Ring is FFVII Rebirth because the combat is very demanding from a strategic perspective. You will almost always get punished for button mashing and have to employ your entire party's skillset to win most battles. You can sweep some early-on fodder, but the game starts throwing mechanics at you quickly, while still demanding you to have high reflexes simultaneously.

My dream ARPG would be an Owlcat or Obsidian game based on Pathfinder 1E with the combat mechanics of Sekiro or Rebirth.

You should play Kingdom Come Deliverance. Lockpicking, stealth stuff, different approaches to dialogue. Hyper realistic, well written. Eastern European vibes, there’s even a skill for drinking,

You know as usual it’s going to be “America can’t make RPGs for ♥♥♥♥”. Europe and literally everywhere else knows how.

In my opinion yes, although with atypical combat.

Eh, lets be honest here, most RPG's are downright terrible at endings, BG3's ending, when first released totally sucked as well.

Many RPGs fail the ending. 'Rocks fall. Everyone dies.'

Luckily I play RPGs for the journey, not the destination.

ARPG is such a weird and broad term.

It encompasses Isometric Diablo-clones, like Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, Last Epoch. Where there is little focus on the story, but a heavy focus on items and character combat development.
Which is a whole sub-genre of games that play very similarly to each other.

As well as games like God of War, Elden Ring, Mass Effect.

I really do need to give that game a shot. I keep hearing nothing but good things, but for some reason, I haven't bothered. I think it's because it isn't fantasy, but I like historical stuff if it's good.

I mean tbh I did the same, then heard about KCD2 and nabbed royal edition with all the dlc for like 3 quid, super cheap

Rocks are the true final boss.

People focus too much on the combat aspect of RPGs in my opinion. Roleplaying games, by definition, do not need a combat or skill system to fit the category. Sub genres mean equally little to determine wether a game qualifies as a roleplaying game, or not. It doesn't matter if it's a strategic, tactical, action, or a "choose your own adventure" kind of game, those are subgenres, but all of them are classified as cRPG (computer roleplaying game) if they are made to be experienced on a computer. While the term has shifted in use by many users today, the original meaning still stands. A roleplaying game that comes to mind is Gamedec, a game without any combat mechanics and only a very basic skill system. It still offers a deep roleplaying experience.

Table Top games are just another sub genre, and while often heavily relying on skill and combat systems, these are not needed to play. All you need are a basic framework and two people to get started - well, actually, you could even roleplay alone if you have the imagination.

DATV shows every sign of it being a classical action RPG, where you as the player roleplay as your character, fight enemies in action real-time combat, make choices along the way and in that way shape part of the story. The action based combat only adds an "a" in front of its definition, but it's the roleplaying elements that fundamentally define the game as an RPG.

That's right, its right around the corner, isn't it? Okay, gonna start that next!

Yeah. Feb. It has a bit of slow start but a ton of heart and it’s just hyper realistic, but this means early levels are annoying because you’re bad at literally everything lol
