Is this game an RPG still?
I know the gameplay had massive changes, but are there still RPG elements? The only thing the store page mentions about RPG elements are skill trees.

Stop talking about Mass Effect 2. I am not asking about Mass Effect 2. I asked if this game is an RPG, not how it holds up to Mass Effect 2.

It has choices, it has optional content, it has items, character customization and skill trees.

It's not tactical combat like DAO, or open world like DAI. World exploration is like Mass Effect 2 and 3, you get deployed to an area from a hub to do missions, and combat is action based like God of War.

So, no. Thanks!

Depends on your purity test for RPGs I guess.

The RPG genre is pretty broad depending on what prefix you wanna throw at the start of the RPG. I consider it an Action RPG now.

For example, ARPGs like Diablo 2 / Path of Exile are probably the most different from what many consider RPGs due to their lack of many traditional RPG elements. They have extremely linear storylines that lack any kind of choice or consequence, there's not any exploration or secrets to find, it's just go through the areas and grind for loot.

An RPG? Yes.
A good one? Doubt it.

Inquisition was a pain to play, the open world was bad and the side quests... terrible. Using ME2 game and level design is a great idea, quality over quantity, quality over a huge empty lifeless world imo.

Here, you got skill progression, equipment progression, hidden stuff to find, a lot of lore and action combat. It looks a lot like an RPG to me. If you want a C-RPG like old times, you have BG3 and old DA:Origins.

The only thing even remotely RPG like is the skill tree.

I think the main function needed for a game to be called rpg is the emphasis on Role, as in how our decisions shape and define our character. Not only through a set of combat skills but also different outcomes in dialogue options etc. Which makes the Diablo series for example, hack n slash, not rpg, imho.

When I play a character, whether that will be a preset like Geralt in Witcher or Shepard in ME or, a custom made in a DnD-game it's important for me to get the feeling that this is my character, I decided who they are as a person.

Bioware have a history of being good at creating that feeling, it's their number one forte. Whether or not they still have that ability remains to be seen.

No, it doesn't "remain to be seen." They're forcing everyone to play the same type of character. You can't be Renegade. It's "what flavor of Paragon are you?" That's why they got rid of blood magic.
What I can tell from combat I've seen this makes me think of Dragon age 2 - 2.

Depends on what you are calling RPG, the acronym got massively diluted in last 20 years.

Some stuff I personally associate with RPGs:

  • Skill progression - YES
  • Gear progression - YES
  • Character builds - YES
  • Progressing story - YES
  • Companion characters - YES
  • Main/Companion character development - YES
  • Choices with impact - YES
  • Pause in combat - YES
  • "Top Down"/"cRPG-like" camera - NO
  • Open World - NO (mission zones)
  • Exploration - YES (the "in-between" area of Crossroads lets you run around, explore for hidden stuff, etc)

Did you enjoy mass effect 2? I did, and it happens to be in my top 5 RPG's of all time.

Yes it's an RPG. And everything points to it being an excellent one.

Yes it is still RPG with all elements of RPG games like character progression, gear management etc
Gameplay didnt took any big changes if you played DA2 and Inquisition only if you compare it to Origins.
I just dont know about exploration. I dont mind if story zones are linear as long as they release optional zones with their story and fully ready for exploration. I know a lot of people didnt like Inquisitions open world but i enjoyed it a lot because every zone in the game with its own story and side content that it looks like it was game in a game. I know Veilguard is not like that but i also dont want liner game. You need to wait till tomorrow. We will see reviews of the game and what to expect.

RPG elements, ok let's go and think. RPG in general has a huge empathise on following aspects:
* World and storytelling - judging from history should be B/A/A+
* Characters interactions - judging from history should be A/S
* Characters customization - B? (it's not a Pathfinder for sure, but has more than 99% of jRPG)
* Exploration and quests - judging from history should be B/A
* Items and inventory - B? (no idea, they exists but the scope is quite vague)

Optional aspects:
* Narrative story choices - unknown, but DA:O had about 5-6, DA:I about the same

In sum, it has quite a lot.

An action/adventure game? Absolutely. May even have a few RPG elements, but a full-blown rpg, it is not.
You realize there are more types of RPGs, they are not all the same. Veilguard IS RPG since you have both character and skill progression, different type of Armor, story with choices and consequences.
Not all RPGs are turn based like Baldurs Gates 3.

Well, to answer your question we really need to talk about Mass Effect 2.
