I played all the games, all the dlcs, read the Maric books, watched the Cassandra film; I was a big a fan of the series. Sure, the sequels never really met the heights of Origins but I still enjoyed them.
Seeing the devs and former devs belittling fans who've had a negative opinion of what they've seen of the new game was incredibly disheartening. Gaider called fans who thought Origins was best in the series "tourists"? We've been here since the series launch, how can we be "tourists"?
Instead of assuaging concerns they just hurl insults on social media, even if these were concerns of some vocal minority how does that paint a good picture of how you treat fans of the series?
I'm sick of modern politics infecting everything; I dinnae care who or whatever side you vote for, just leave me out of it and leave it out products that are supposed to be entertaining.
He wasn't calling Origins fans tourists, I mean I hate that word in principle but at least contextualize it accurately. He was calling people who didn't notice "woke" content in the games since Origins tourists.
Also. He was the writer, if anything you would want him back despite what he says because he gave us characters like Morrigan and Alistair.
And is credited in writing the Dragon Age setting (Thedas)
As disappointing as that is for fans, that's the dude you want for DA.
You're not wrong about him being instrumental in creating the series but that was 15 years ago. I'm apprehensive about his return fixing anything with his current attitude.
People celebrated Russell T Davies returning to Doctor Who thinking the show would be more like how it was when he was in charge 15 years ago and if anything it got even worse. A person's goals can change a lot in that time.
You aren't wrong about bringing back creators of something isn't always a plus, but to be quite honest Gaider is never going to return. His relationship with Bioware during the Anthem era completely soured. You know what comments people aren't posting? How he's not sure if he'd even play DA:VG just in case he thinks he could make it better, or in case it makes him devalue someone like Weekes's work.
He's been vocal against Bioware for years, and he was around since 1999
My point is, we can't lament the old, but not allow space for the new. I'm a fan of Gaider's writing but think Weekes has a special talent for bringing characters to life. Weekes helped work on characters like Mordin. Additionally they wrote the Masked Empire.
I love DA, books, comics - Dawn of The Seeker I watched. Played through Origins to Inquisition multiple times.
I have many concerns, but as someone who very much skipped out on ME:A because they deviated, I'm seeing something different in this than I did in ME:A (which ended up being an ok game years later when I played though I'd never replay it tbh)
Where do we draw the line here? Of who gets to work on this IP. People have been calling for Bioware Devs to lose their job since DA2.
Yet new developers are constantly harrassed by communities because of their "inexperience" and also - who do YOU think should expand on the world setting Gaider practically wrote?
Personally, if I were to give the series to anyone, it would be Larian. Since they'd understand the fantasy setting a bit better.
If I look at Baldur's Gate 3 for example: You can literally go though the game genociding everyone and anything (quests be damned) if you choose to. It's up to the player. Also a lot of quests have at least two ways to be handled, if not more. Veilguard seems to be it will be as flat as possible.
Maybe I'm wrong and it turns out great, but I doubt it. And the (unconfirmed) leaks doesn't give me much hope (but we will see I guess).
Yes, that is David Gaider - the guy who doesn't work for Bioware anymore, hasn't for years but also was the Lead Writer and practically creator of Thedas.....as I explained in the post your quoting me from.
I just -??
Aw, you thought that was a gotcha moment. For someone who likes Warhammer I'm a bit surprised you aren't able to enjoy your settings in multiple combat mechanic styles.
Edit: I was talking about writers. Larian has amazing writers.
youre right, nobody is forcing me to buy this game. but also, nobody is stopping me from making this post saying how an old fan is very unhappy with what EA is doing.
"go play older games" blah blah is a shallow point. imagine being a star wars fan as an example, loving the OG 3 movies, lore, etc, etc and liking the prequels then the new age star wars comes out and its bad. ofc fans are unhappy, and saying "just go watch the older movies" is such a stupid comment. they already seen the older movies, same how i already played the older games.
i dont want a game "everyone likes". i want dragon age. veilguard is anything but dragon age only using the names and locations of dragon age.
