Why does it matter how much the game has sold?
I might be in the minority on this issue as I'm not a big time gamer. The game I play the most is sims4, so that tells you a lot about me already lol. I also play skyrim, mass effect, life is strange type games and other text based games. So I'm not a real gamer gamer person.

However, I have always loved Dragon Age. I got my first copy when I was a kid and I'm twenty-nine now. So I've basically grew up on Bioware games as one of the few actual video games I played.

So now to my question...

WHO CARES?

I literally don't understand why people care how much the game has made. I see a lot of posts either shaming the game for not selling what other games sold or cheering for the big numbers it has so far.

I've been watching a lot of people on YouTube enjoy the game as much as I have, even people who claim to hate it. Isn't that what the discussion should be about? What you like and dislike about the game and not how many sales it has? I don't know, maybe it's just me.

I said the people, as in the community playing it. I don't think you're going to be forking out any money to Bioware if they can't continue? So why are we discussing how much it has made rather than what we like and dislike about it.

Sales matter for the life of a company.
The rumoured price tag of this game to develop was $250 MILLION dollars! Before we even get into the small details. this means Dragon Age has to sell over 3 million copies to just break even.

However, its actually worst then that. They (Bioware) have been surviving on investment capital since their last game (IF that game made money!). Investments that have to be paid back, with interest.

Now, add to that factor, Steam takes anywhere from 30 to 50% of the sales revenue (for Bioware, I expect that to be closer to 30%) Added all together, this means Bioware needs to sell about 5 million copies to break even.

Now, you are playing the game. (I am not) do you see this game has being "good enough" to sell 5 million copies? Do you think there is enough people that have an interest in Dragon Age, who will enjoy this game AND will to shell out $80?

Now, if the game doesn't sell the required copies, this puts Bioware and EA into a position:
Will there be investors willing to fund Bioware for their next release given the sales performance of the game?
IF YES: Then life continues on for Bioware and EA.

IF NO: Then they are hooped. With no revenue from this game, and no investor willing to back their next game, they are dead in the water, and a dead weight to EA....

And this is the point that EA (as evident from their past actions) shutter the studio, lay off staff, and transfer assets to other development houses.

So this game, based on its sales, could spell the end of Bioware.

And if Bioware falls..... well... no more mass effect, or dragon age, or anything else from the studio.

Now, I have not purchased the game, because we are in the "hype cycle" right now, and I can't get a unbiased opinion on the game - in either direction. So I will wait a few weeks, watch a couple of lets-plays from you-tubers I like and form my own opinion on if its worth my time and money....

If a game doesn't sell well it likely won't have a continuation.

Matters quite a lot from an industry perspective. For your average, casual, passive gamer? Not really.

Exactly my point. I'm new to Steam discussions and it's a little bothersome to see five messages in a row either shaming or cheering how much the game made.

I just want to read real and honest opinions, not a competition about which game company sells more.

I don't care. I don't buy my games based on how much it sells, I buy and play games because I want to enjoy it.

Does it really need a 5th game in the series?

It does not to me, I just find it funny how many delusional people are here trying to pretend this games is something great and "is a big success and return to form for Bioware".

I never said they were? This is my own opinion and question.

DAV is the latest cudgel being used in a culture war headed by bigots who yearn for the days of yesteryear when games were more exclusively pandered to them. These people need games like DAV, which are visibly embracing a wider audience, to fail to prove their backwards reasoning "correct".

It's a matter of insecurity and gatekeeping. Even though all monetary reports for the game trend positive they *need* it to fail to prove their worldview correct this time, unlike all the other times their targeted game was not a financial failure.

No, all we get is remake after sequel after remaster. It needs to stop.

6th was technically right before you edited it. Heroes of Dragon Age was a spinoff mobile thing.
