Having characters that are overtly homosexuals in 2009, several years before gay marriage was legalized is way more bold than having a binary person today.
Shale was a dwarf woman before becoming a golem and more or less became a golem because they didn't feel "right" in a dwarf woman's body.
See above comment.
Not realising that the rock monster was a dwarf woman who transferred herself into a golem body because they felt they didn't belong in their birth body
(More to it than just that, like this they could also serve and defend the dwarves better etc etc but I'm not gonna write out Shale's entire story here)
she volunteered to become a golem like hundreds of other dwarves because the dark spawn were about to wipe out the dwarves.
literally in her ending she goes to tevinter with wynee because she wants to see if it is possible to get her body back.
when she gets her body back at the end they say there is a dwarf “WOMAN” killing pigeons out there.
IF they get their body back, that's a CHOICE you can make and not necessarily canon. And OTHER people refer to them as a woman. Shale literally says they are gender neutral when you ask them and doesn't ever refer to themselves as being a woman.
Even when talking about their past they say they never really felt like a woman, it's WHY they volunteered to become a golem.
Again, not the only reason, it was also because they wanted to defend the dwarves against the darkspawn but it was why it was so easy and they barely gave a second thought to becoming a stone monster because they felt they didn't belong in their original body.
