PC crashing upon startup
Begging for help here. I’ve been waiting ten years for this game, and I’m unable to play it.

Downloaded the game on Thursday. Played all night Thursday night. On Friday, I decided that the graphics weren’t what I wanted, so I was going to update my GPU and CPU. Ever since, I’ve been unable to play. Every time I launch the game, it crashes my whole PC. The farthest I’ve gotten was to the companion preview, then shutdown. Here’s all I’ve done to try and fix this:

- upgraded PSU
- upgraded cooling system (max temp during launch was 69C)
- updated drivers
- updated windows
- updated BIOS
- flashed BIOS
- turned on Secure Boot
- uninstalled and reinstalled the game
- verified files through steam
- launched in windowed mode

PSU is MSI 850w
GPU is Radeon RX6750 XT
CPU is Ryzen 9 5900X

I just don’t know what else to do. I just want to play the game. I’ve seen a couple other people having this issue, but haven’t seen anyone able to help. If anyone has any suggestions, they’re greatly appreciated!!

how did you make this post if your pc keeps crashing every time you boot it up ?

So that means you were able to run the game before you did your hardware upgrade?

If so, try deleting the contents of the shader_cache folder in the game folder. It might be that the shaders for the old setup cannot be reused.

Already tried to check if there's some useful suggestion in this thread?

I’ll definitely try that. I did uninstall and reinstall after upgrading hardware. Would I still need to delete those shaders?

Yes, I went through this thread a few hours ago. Unfortunately I’ve done everything that’s been recommended in there, and I’m still having issues.

Did you peek into your windows error log to get a better idea why it crashes?
Just type"error log" into your windows search bar.

Assuming the chip set was not changed (motherboard) a reinstall of windows should not technically be needed but honestly If I'm slotting a new CPU I would have done this anyways. Also what was your prior GPU? Did you come from an Nvidia driver to AMD driver? If so DDU would be needed, there is an option within DDU specifically for this.

Is it only crashing when you play the game or regularly outside of this?

When i upgraded my system from a 2700x and a 5700xt to a 5700x3d and 7800xt i had to do a full wipe and restart to clear out years of ♥♥♥♥... hopefully you dont need to do that

Yes! The error messages were all about permissions, so I changed BIOS to do secure boot, and that unfortunately did not fix the issue.

It’s only crashing when I launch DA:TV. Currently, that’s the only intense game I have installed. I launched the Sims 4 to test it and the PC did not crash. Im so sorry you had to do a full clear! Really really hoping I can avoid that.

My last GPU was XFX - AMD Radeon RX 580 GTS. Would I still need to do anything with DDU? I do have the option to install windows 11, but I’m honestly nervous it’ll mess things up more.

Would not hurt anything to do DDU - Worth a try - Latest AMD driver

Have to be in windows safe mode to use DDU, I like to use msconfig for this but there are other ways.
winkey+R = Run Menu type "msconfig" click boot tab - check "safe boot" ok, then restart. Once if safe mode you have to repeat this process first and de-check safe boot, after you hit ok select "continue without restart" as DDU will reboot for you.

If this is confusing I'm sure there are tons of video's on youtube.. its not hard and really every PC gamer should know this anyways :P

From your error log could you please post:
the exception code
the faulting module? looks like c:\windows\blahblah\xyz.dll
the desciption text (if there is any)

As for the ddu suggestion, you can do that, it helps people but it's usually only required when you change hardware.
Naver 3 NOV 2024 a las 7:42 p. m.
You could try to limit the CPU in windows power plan, or use PBO. It heats up very quickly during launch and may force a shutdown.

As a test you could also go into BIOS and disable the Core Performance Boost altogether (Settings->AMD CBS->CPU Common Settings->Core Performance Boost), the CPU will then run on base clock. Try this and look if the game still crashes.
